TEAMS: Boston Red Sox, Toronto Blue Jays, New York Yankees
The Red Sox already owned the basement in the AL East all by themselves, however they hoped to not be swept by the Jays in Sunday's afternoon matchup. Clay Buchholz took the mound for the Sox and hoped to stop this massive skid they have been on. Buchholz pitched a decent game and almost a complete game, but he'd still end up with a loss at the end of the day. The Sox are 15 games under 500 and I am not sure it will get any better from here until the end of the season.
Buchholz got an early lead when Jacoby Ellsbury hit a 2 run HR in the 2nd inning. Sox 2-0. However, Buchholz ended up giving up the lead in the 3rd inning. Mathis hit an RBI single to score the first Jays run. Sox 2-1. The Jays then tied it up on a sac fly from Vizquel and then took the lead on an RBI single from Hechavarria. Sox 2-3. That lead was so nice and pretty while it lasted. The score stayed that way until the 6th inning when Dustin Pedroia went LA LUNA and tied the game with a solo HR. So...

Clay Buchholz Says 'Put it on Me' of Ninth Inning in Sox Loss (Video)
Nothing continues to go right for the Red Sox. After an abysmal road trip, they were promplty swept by the Toronto Blue Jays, with Sunday's defeat sending the Sox to a magic number of six for mathematical elimination from the playoffs. Clay Buchholz entered the ninth inning with the score tied at three, hoping to send the Sox to the bottom of the frame for a potential walkoff...
Clay Buchholz, Bobby Valentine Lament One Pitch That Hurt Sox Against Blue Jays
BOSTON -- With two men aboard in the ninth, Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine made a trek to the mound. At that point in Sunday's 4-3 loss, Valentine wanted to check on starter Clay Buchholz's status, considering he was on pace to throw a complete game. Valentine was prepping for the possibility of inserting a reliever. "I wanted to make sure he believed like I did that...
Daisuke Matsuzaka In Jeopardy of Losing Spot in Red Sox Rotation to Alfredo Aceves
BOSTON -- Daisuke Matsuzaka may have started his last game in a Red Sox uniform. After Matsuzaka regressed in his past two starts, including yielding five runs through 1 1/3 innings on Saturday, Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine hinted at possibly pulling the 31-year-old pitcher from the rotation. "I'm not sure," Valentine said, when asked if Matsuzaka would receive another...
Clayton Mortensen Eyeing A Full-Time Roster Spot With Red Sox in 2013
BOSTON –– Clayton Mortensen has shuttled back and forth from Triple-A to the majors on six occasions this season. One second, he's a passenger on the team's private charter to the West Coast, and the next, he's riding the bus to an obscure East Coast town with the Pawtucket Red Sox. Regardless of the venue, Mortensen has dazzled in relief. In 20 games for the Red...
Ryan Kalish Trying to Earn Role With Red Sox for 2013 and Beyond (Video)
Ryan Kalish is getting the opportunity to show the Red Sox what he's capable of doing at the plate. Kalish has been up and down between the big leagues and the minors over the last couple of years, having a hard time staying healthy. Now, he's back with the Red Sox trying to secure a job in the Boston outfield for the 2013 season. Going into Sunday's series finale against...
Ryan Kalish, Cody Ross Getting Hotter as Red Sox Look to Beat Off Blue Jays
Editor's note: The temperature gauge is a Bill James-created statistic that measures how hot or cold hitters are. We will spotlight Red Sox and opposing team temperatures on game days. The Red Sox' bats have been just about as cold as they can be over recent weeks. Even Dustin Pedroia, who had a 15-game hitting streak and was keeping the Sox afloat amidst a dreadful West...
Alex Wilson Helps Pitch PawSox Into International League Championship (Video)
Whether Alex Wilson starts or finishes a game for the Pawtucket Red Sox, he always puts his team in position to win. Wilson, who appears as both a starter or a reliever for the PawSox, had never pitched out of the bullpen in his professional career until this season. Since making the switch, he's been a nightmare for opposing hitters. Although he isn't pitching as many innings...
Sox Lose a See-Saw Game
They led, they trailed, they tied ... and then they lost, 4-3. Clay Buchholz pitched nearly the entire game (8 2/3), but for naught. His record drops to 11-6.All the Sox runs were on homers, one by Ellsbury (pictured) for two runs and one from Pedroia. The Blue Jays climbed over the Sox in this series, moving to fourth in the AL East. Not exactly celebration time, but a pretty loud...
Jarrod Saltalamacchia Sidelined by Back Spasms After Hefty Workload, Long Road Trip
BOSTON -- Back spasms have resulted in Jarrod Saltalamacchia's latest setback. During the seventh inning of the series opener against the Blue Jays, the catcher left the game and was replaced by Ryan Lavarnway. A day later, Lavarnway received the starting nod over Saltalamacchia. "Salty is going to rest all day today and not take batting practice," Red Sox manager Bobby...
David Ortiz Still a Question Mark With Injured Achilles (Video)
As each day passes, it grows more and more unlikely that David Ortiz returns to the Red Sox this season. Ortiz has missed a signicant chunk of the season with an ailling Achilles tendon, and whether he plays again in 2012 is still up in the air. In 90 games this season, Ortiz is hitting .318 with 23 home runs. Check out the video above to hear Ortiz talk on Red Sox First Pitch on...

The Pawtucket Red Sox have advanced to the Governors' Cup final (final round of IL Playoffs) with their 7-1, game 4 victory over the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees.

Daisuke Matsuzaka 'Disappointed' He Can't Help Struggling Red Sox (Video)
Daisuke Matsuzaka has been awful in his last two starts for the Red Sox. Everyone knows it, including himself. Matsuzaka left Saturday night's start against the Toronto Blue Jays after just 1 1/3 innings, allowing five runs on five hits and picking up his fifth loss of the season. Matsuzaka also had trouble against the Oakland Athletics on Sept. 2, when he gave up six runs over...
Jon Lester Defends Josh Beckett, Commends Former Teammate for Having 'A Lot of Guts'
Jon Lester didn't know the Boston Red Sox without Josh Beckett. In a span of just a couple of days in late August, though, the two were separated when Beckett was dealt to the Dodgers. So maybe it shouldn't come as much of a surprise that Lester feels the need to defend Beckett after the pitcher was shipped to Los Angeles as part of a blockbuster trade last month. "Josh...
