Jeanmar Gomez has been named the fifth starter in the Indians starting rotation. The 24-year-old righty joins Justin Masterson, Ubaldo Jimenez, Josh Tomlin, and Derek Lowe in the Tribe’s rotation to start the season. Gomez went 5-3 with a 4.47 ERA in 11 games (1o starts) last season. He beat out other fifth starter candidate Kevin Slowey, who was traded for this offseason in exchange for Zach Putnam. There was some question as Jeanmar suffered a strained right hip on Friday, though the fifth starter won’t be needed until April 11th.  The remaining roster spots in question are the final two bench spots between Jose Lopez, Aaron Cunningham, Ryan Spilborghs, and many others as well as the final bullpen spot.

Frank Herrmann, believed to be a frontrunner for the final bullpen spot, was sent down to Columbus. That leaves the final bullpen spot to be determined between Jeremy Accardo and newly-acquired Jairo Asencio.

The Indians open on Thursday afternoon against the Toronto Blue Jays at Progressive Field.
