Every time I hear the name “Samardzija”, I question whether or not the young man made the right choice in deciding to play baseball instead of football coming out of college. So far, it looks like he made the wrong one, but 2011 may unfold a different, more promising storyline for the Notre Dame alum.

Manager Mike Quade and the Chicago Cubs have decided to use hard-throwing righty Jeff Samardzija strictly out of the bullpen this season. Samardzija, who had a rumored underdog shot at the starting rotation earlier in the spring, will be a versatile option out of the pen in any type of relief.
