Doctors have cleared The Captain for workouts Derek Jeter says he has been cleared to workout by doctors, according to sources. “I’ve got the OK to start,” said Jeter, the 38-year-old captain of the New York Yankees, at a launch party for his Turn 2 Foundation Celebrity Golf Classic. He added, “But I don’t start until next week or the week after, anyway. In terms of baseball activity, I’m right where I need to be.” Jeter broke his ankle in Game 1 of the ALCS against the Tigers on October 13 and had surgery a week later. His recovery time was estimated to be four to five months, which was enough time for his rehab to be complete by the start of the season. He is right on schedule play on Opening Day, which is at home against the Red Sox on April 1. Jeter had a resurgent season in 2012, where he batted .316, had 15 home-runs, and scored 99 runs. However, it will be his defense that will be looked at when he returns to the field. It is no secret that his range has become limited, which is only expected for a player entering his 18th season, but with the ankle injury, his range could be even less than expected. It will be something keep notice of when he returns, but they call him The Captain for a reason.
