Derek Jeter was placed on the disabled list today with ankle soreness, effectively ending his season. It’s been a hard year for the 39-year-old shortstop, who has called this season a “nightmare.” After breaking his left ankle in game one of the 2012 ALCS, he re-fractured it in March, strained his quad in July and then strained his calf in August. In just 17 games, Jeter went 12-for-63 (.190) with a homer and 7 RBIs. The Captain has a $9 million player option he can exercise for 2014. He will likely do so, unless he opts out and forces the Yankees to possibly give him a new deal. At this point, you have to go year-to-year with Jeter. After all, there aren’t many 39 year old shortstops over the course of baseball history. Jeter said in his press conference late Wednesday afternoon that ”you don’t start thinking about the end just because you have an injury.” He plans on using the entire offseason to strengthen his legs and come back with a purpose in 2014. The Yankees acquired shortstop Brendan Ryan last night from the Mariners, a sign that they were obviously concerned with Jeter’s status. Ryan will not be eligible should the Yankees make the postseason since he wasn’t on the roster prior to September 1. With Jeter’s drive and ability to prove people wrong, don’t be surprised when he comes back strong next year. Derek Jeter is going on the DL. His season is over. — Bryan Hoch (@BryanHoch) September 11, 2013
