JUPITER, Fla. (AP) -- Joe Kelly allowed three hits and one run in four solid innings Thursday to strengthen his claim on the fifth spot in the St. Louis Cardinals' rotation in a 5-4 win over the Atlanta Braves.
Matt Adams broke a 4-all tie with a two-out single in the bottom of the eighth inning.
Kelly has had an impressive spring training. He has allowed just five hits and two earned runs in eight innings over three starts. Shelby Miller, his main competition for the last rotation spot, allowed six hits and three earned runs in 2 2-3 innings.
Mike Minor allowed six hits and four runs in five innings for the Braves. He retired 12 of the first 14 hitters he faced and allowed just one hit prior to the fifth -- the Cardinals batted around and scored four runs on five hits off the lefty in his final inning.

JUPITER, Fla. Shelby Miller knows what will happen if best friend Joe Kelly is tabbed as the Cardinals fifth starter over him.
"If he gets the fifth spot, I'm not going to talk to him anymore," Miller quipped.
Jokes aside, the roommates find themselves as the two remaining competitors to be the fifth starter in the Cardinals' rotation.

I have been writing a series of posts that seem to take issues with how projection
systems predict certain players over the course of the 2013 season. It may seem like I
have an issue with projection systems. The fact is that I do not. When you put all of
their projections together, the margin for error is quite small. All of them pretty much
work the same way. You plug in the...
Following are the highlights from the first minor league games of 2013. A trio of intersquad games were held on Wednesday in preparation for Thursday’s initial contests against external competition.

On Friday, the St. Louis Cardinals announced that ace starter Adam Wainwright would make the opening day start when the team kicks off the 2013 season on the road at Arizona on April 1. Wainwright certainly deserves the opening day start, but will the Cardinals also reward Wainwright with a contract offer before then?
As was discussed on Friday night's episode of The Cruddy...
The St. Louis Cardinals have used three weeks of spring training to find their likely middle infielders for the upcoming season, but one big decision remains as to who will take the fifth spot in the starting rotation. Fortunately, the Cardinals should be in good shape regardless of who they choose.
Three contestants began the battle for the final starting spot at the beginning...
A recent comment by blingboy led me to ponder the question that led to this post – Who might the reserves behind the St. Louis Cardinals reserves be?
Of course, we have to begin with those projected to make up the season-opening five-man bench. My current thinking:
Catcher – Tony Cruz
Corner infield – Ty Wigginton
Middle infield – Daniel Descalso
Outfield – Shane Robinson...
As the beginning of the 2013 season draws closer, there has been plenty of talk about the contract talks surrounding ace Adam Wainwright and the fifth starter competition between young guns Joe Kellly and Shelby Miller. While those stories are intriguing, Lance Lynn and Jaime Garcia may be the two most important members of the St. Louis Cardinals starting rotation in 2013.
We're inching closer to real baseball, and today the Cardinals announced that Adam Wainwright will be the Opening Day starter.
This surprises no one.
But there are still some big issues to resolve before the Cardinals start the season. So let's break down where we're at headed into the last 2 weeks of spring.
Oscar. Will he make the team? Looks like this...
JUPITER, Fla. (AP) -- Adam Wainwright has no idea who the fan was that gave him that picture last week. He'd sure like to tell them thank you.
Wainwright limited Washington to one run in six strong innings in the St. Louis Cardinals' 5-1 exhibition victory over the Nationals on Friday, his second consecutive impressive start since a fan helped him fix a mechanical flaw....
The St. Louis Cardinals trimmed their spring camp roster down to 45 after Thursday’s moves.
The Oakland A's trade of Mark Mulder to the St. Louis Cardinals in December 2004 was one of the defining moments of the A's last decade. While there is only one player with the A's from that original deal, the repercussions of the deal are still resonating with the organization. Chris Biderman takes a look at the original deal and the deals that came out of it.
Adam Wainwright limited Washington to one run in six strong innings and Matt Adams hit a three-run homer in the St. Louis Cardinals' 5-1 exhibition victory over the Nationals on Friday.
Facing mostly Washington backups, Wainwright took a shutout into the sixth inning and allowed only three hits in his second consecutive impressive start.
Jon Jay and Adams homered in a four...
Spring Training 2013 was not supposed to be an exciting one for the St. Louis Cardinals. A team that had made very few offseason moves was primarily set for the upcoming season. Then, an injury to a veteran starter opened up a door.

The injury to Chris Carpenter might have opened up a door but the depth within the organization has kicked it...
Kyle Lohse went through this as a free agent once before. Five years ago on Thursday, he signed a one-year, $4.25 million contract with the St. Louis Cardinals.
This time, Lohse is taking even longer to find a new team.
Lohse, 34, is working out both near his home in Arizona and at a facility operated by his agent, Scott Boras – the Boras Sports Training Institute in Aliso...
