Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times is reporting that Rays reliever Joel Peralta has been suspended eight games for having a foreign substance on his glove. Peralta was ejected from Tuesday's game between the Rays and the Nationals before even throwing a pitch after Nationals manager Davey Johnson requested that the umpires check Peralta's glove for a foreign substance, and many believe Johnson was tipped off by a Nationals player or coach. Peralta played with Washington during the 2010 season.

How insane is this suspension? Peralta didn't even throw a pitch in this game. He was ejected and suspended for merely the presence of pine tar on his glove. Meanwhile, you have beanballs thrown from guys like Cole Hamels and Ubaldo Jimenez, and they only get nicked for five games. You have NUMEROUS players get charged with DUIs, and not get charged. Miguel Cabrera gets a DUI, takes a swig of whiskey behind the wheel in front of a cop, get a year of probation, and get his drivers license suspended for a year....and he doesn't even get a slap on the wrist. Meanwhile, Peralta doesn't even get caught doctoring a baseball, and gets suspended for eight games. How completely and utterly absurd is this?

Peralta is appealing his suspension, and rightly so. If Major League Baseball thinks this is an isolated incident, they have no idea what's going on in their sport. Suspending Peralta for this could unleash a Pandora's box on the league's pitchers that has the potential to take down numerous high level players. This has the potential to get very ugly, very quickly.

Oh, and for the record, Davey Johnson believed that Peralta didn't deserve to be suspended. Great job listening to people on the field, MLB.
