See ya next year Santana

According to The 'Ropolitans, Brad Como of SNY in New York is reporting via Twitter that Mets ace Johan Santana will undergo minor surgery. The arthroscopic surgery will keep Santana out of commission for the remainder of the 2009 baseball season but he should be back in time for spring training.

This is a tough break for the Mets, who have fallen 16.5 games behind the NL East leading Phillies. The news came within an hour of learning that Billy Wagner had accepted a trade to the Boston Red Sox for a pair of players to be named later.

So where will the Mets go from here?

Let us be clear that the Mets had their 2009 season hijacked by injuries. Based on the inordinate amount of players being removed form the active roster this way it would be unfair to make any harsh changes such as a change at either the manager or geneal manager positions. While these positions may be areas for concern, it would be unjust to grade their jobs based on the 2009 season.

I for one fully expect the Mets to be in the mix again in 2010, but it will be interesting to see how the organization responds in the off season. Given that Phillies fans took over Citi Field this weekend the Mets must know that they need to do something.
