This one’s going up on the refrigerator. The Red Sox have an American League-best 58-39 record at the All-Star break, and they hold a 2 1/2-game lead in the AL East. The complaints in Boston are few and far between, and the Red Sox’ midseason report card reflects that. The Red Sox have been extremely balanced this season, so there were a lot of high marks passed out. The club really has a next-man-up mentality, and that has made it easier for Boston to overcome any adversity thrown its way. After all, the Red Sox have enjoyed a sensational season, but they haven’t been perfect. The AL East figures to be a dogfight, so the Red Sox can’t afford to take their foot off the gas, especially with the Rays playing well before the break. The Sox will face a huge test out of the gate in the second half, as their first 10 games are against divisional opponents. John Farrell made it clear before the All-Star break that his players aren’t reflecting too much on the successful first half. They’re instead focusing on the task at hand, which is closing out the season strong and going after a World Series title. That doesn’t mean we can’t look back, though, and what better way to summarize the season to date than hand out grades? The red pen has been broken out, and the Red Sox are headed for the honor roll.
