It seems like every time I check the box score these days Jon Rauch has tossed another scoreless inning for the Mets. It’s getting to the point where I expect to see it now and the numbers for the 6’11″ righty have not disappointed. Since June 10th of this year Rauch has trimmed his ERA from a fat 4.88 all the way down to a slim 2.98. The 33-year-old has managed to cut almost two points off his earned run average by allowing just 3 ER in his last 24 1/3 innings pitched (1.11 ERA).
Rauch has been one of the best relievers in all of baseball since the All-Star break and nearly unhittable, allowing just 6 hits in 16 innings to go along with 2 saves, 7 holds, and a nifty 1.13 ERA. I’m not quite sure what has gotten into the big righty, but maybe he just needed to get a feel for performing in New York. He certainly hasn’t taken to Twitter nearly as much as he did early in the season but it was nice to see him back on yesterday wishing everyone a happy labor day.

I love when players interact with fans on Twitter but if Big Jon wants to focus on dominating hitters and keep the social media to a minimum, I’m all for it. He’s been lights out of late and has definitely been worth the $3.5 million investment the team made in him this offseason. With a finish like this, Rauch is likely earning a raise for next season and maybe even a multi-year deal, which probably means he’ll be playing somewhere besides Queens come 2013.
