The Mets came into Sunday night’s game having lost five of their last six games and 21 of their last 29. Additionally, they had dropped seven straight games this season to the Braves. The way the second half has unfolded means there’s no such thing as a “must-win” game for the 2012 Mets. Nevertheless, Jonathon Niese’s outing last night was like a breath of fresh air. With the bullpen having worked 7.2 innings in Saturday’s game, Niese gave the club exactly what it needed, with eight strong innings. He handed a 6-1 game over to the pen and that was enough – barely – for the Mets to get the win. Niese has a 3.67 ERA for the season which is right in line with his 3.96 FIP and 3.63 xFIP. The three previous seasons, Niese’s ERA has been above, and in most cases significantly above, his estimators. In 2011, he had a 4.40 ERA compared to a 3.36 FIP and a 3.28 xFIP. In the past, Niese has been done in by elevated BABIPs and a slightly below average strand rate. This year he has a d...

Jon Niese has been more up than down in 2012

When you look at New York Mets starter Jonathon Niese‘s overall numbers it’s easy to see he’s enjoying a fine season.  Last night the coin ended up on heads as Niese came out and threw eight fantastic innings of 1-run ball against the Braves to help the Mets fend off a sweep.  Sitting at 9-6 with a 3.67 ERA it’s hard to find fault with the 25-year-old lefty’s 2012 campaign...

Mets Back Gem By Niese Despite Nail-Biting Ninth To Avoid Sweep 6-5

Overcoming an ugly ninth inning, the Mets were able to back Niese’s excellent outing and avoid being swept by the Braves by a final score of 6-5. Recap: Last time the Mets faced Ben Sheets, the result was quite unsightly. This time around however, the Amazin’s got a little bit of revenge. It started in the first when Wright roped his 34th double of the year, scoring Mike Baxter...

Post-Game: Mets Hang On…Barely, 6-5

Jon Niese tied his longest outing of the year going 8 innings against Atlanta on Sunday night. The Mets entered Sunday night’s game looking to salvage a win from their three-game series against the Braves and did just that as Jon Niese had one of his best starts of the season, allowing only a Freddie Freeman solo home run and pitching a solid eight innings. To sum up the first...

Can Niese and the Mets Pull the Sheets Over Braves Eyes?

Sunday, August 12, 2012 ESPN – 8:05 PM Ben Sheets (4-1, 1.41) vs Jonathon Niese (8-6, 3.82) The Mets and Braves play a prime time game tonight as the Mets try to forget everything about the baseball since the All-Star break. Last night was rough as Santana struggled allowing too many runs in too short of a period of time. Tonight Jon Niese looks to play stopper as he steps up...

Mets 6, Braves 5

Pre-Game: Atlanta Braves (66-47) @ New York Mets (54-60)

Let’s just say that Johan’s first start off the DL was not a successful one. That was one über ugly performance. Johan’s last three starts against the Braves have been just awful. 1 1/3 innings and 8 runs, 5 innings 6 runs, 1 1/3 innings 6 runs (4 earned). For some unknown reason, ESPN/MLB has decided that this game is so big that it has been moved to an 8pm start. Luckily...

Even in win, Mets reminded of major flaw

The Mets squeezed out another rare win at home, but not without another reminder of the weakness that has led to so many of the losses. New York appeared set to cruise to a rare laugher lately at Citi Field, thanks to multiple-hit games from David Wright, Ike Davis and Jordany Valdespin, and a strong start from Jon Niese. But after Niese turned over a five-run lead to the bullpen...
