Minor overcomes slow start for best outing yet

Mike Minor wasn't optimistic after the first couple of innings on Saturday. He had no reason to be. His control was erratic he walked the first batter of the game and hit the first guy he faced in the second. He wasn't fooling anyone. He couldn't even get on the same page with catcher Brian McCann. Only two double plays saved him and the Atlanta Braves from severe...

Braves back on track with sweep of Brewers

Do you remember those four straight losses to begin the season? I didn't think so. The Braves don't either. Five wins in a row are a great way of making folks forget the past, more handy than those little strobe lights they used in the "Men in Black" flicks. That dismal start is long gone and everything is clicking for the Braves, who used every part of their...

Chipper Jones back in Braves' lineup

Chipper Jones is starting for the Braves against the Brewers after missing two games with swelling in his surgically repaired left knee. Jones is back at third base and hitting third for the Braves in Sunday's game. He had arthroscopic surgery on March 26 to repair a torn meniscus in the knee and missed the first four games of the season. He had the knee drained before the...

Game Day Pictures: Braves vs Brewers 4-13-12

Home Opener! We had beautiful weather and it was so great to see friends, old and new, all around the park. I only went to Friday's game, but it was exactly as exciting as you'd hope. My pictures below, followed by some pro photos... my usher friend Constance says, "I love it when you come to BP. (Stuff) gets interesting when you're here." Heh, I'm glad...

Adam Jones, Jason Heyward to wear special cleats on Jackie Robinson Day

Jackie Robinson Day will be celebrated throughout the majors on Sunday, and two young African-American outfielders have a special tribute planned. Adam Jones of the Orioles and Jason Heyward of the Braves plan to wear the cleats pictured above to honor the man who broke MLB’s color barrier. Heyward tweeted that the cleats are the Nike Griffey Jr. Swingman model spikes. He also...

Minor dominant as Braves beat Brewers

ATLANTA (AP) -- For the first time this season, the Braves won a game on the strength of their starting pitching. Atlanta manager Fredi Gonzalez suggested it won't be the last time Mike Minor dominates a game. Minor pitched two-hit ball into the eighth inning to give Atlanta's rotation a lift and the Braves survived a ninth-inning scare to beat Shaun Marcum and the Milwaukee...

Series Preview: Mets @ Braves

The 6-3 Mets are headed to the 5-4 Atlanta Braves tonight, for a re-match of the opening series in which the Braves appeared to sleep through their alarm for the early 1pm games. The Braves got swept in New York, but since then have won 5 of their last 6 games. So we need to be careful with making assumptions about this week’s series. Why? Well for starters, the Braves have Chipper...

Braves to retire Smoltz's number

The Atlanta Braves announced on Monday that they will retire righthander John Smoltz's number. Smoltz spent 20 years with the Braves before spending his last season with both the Boston Red Sox and St. Louis Cardinals. The Braves will officially retire No. 29 during a ceremony on June 8. Greg Maddux and Tom Glavine, who were Smoltz's teammates during the team's extended...

Braves stay winless vs. Mets this season

ATLANTA (AP) -- Ike Davis hit a tiebreaking three-run homer and Dillon Gee pitched four-hit ball over seven innings, leading the New York Mets to another victory over the Atlanta Braves, 6-1 Monday night. The Mets snapped Atlanta's five-game winning streak and kept up their early dominance in the NL East rivalry, winning again after a three-game sweep of the Braves in New York...

Game Preview: Mets @ Braves

The Mets travel down to Atlanta tonight to take on the Braves for the second time this year. In the first meeting this year, the Mets took all three games on their way to their quick start to the season. Recently, the Braves have Larry back in their lineup and are riding a 5 game win streak, pulling up to a game back behind the Amazins, and 1.5 games behind the Braves. The Mets will...
