Alarm bells started ringing when the news broke that Atlanta Braves reliever Jonny Venters was going to see Dr James Andrews for the second time this season. Those fears seem to have been justified, with MLB.com's Mark Bowman tweeting that Venters is expected to have the second Tommy John surgery  of his careers today (Thursday). The Braves officially confirmed the news shortly afterwards: #Braves LHP Jonny Venters underwent “Tommy John” surgery today to reconstruct the ulnar collateral ligament in his left elbow. — Atlanta Braves (@Braves) May 16, 2013 Venters has not pitched this season and the surgery guarantees that he won't pitch again until 2014. Eric O'Flaherty will continue to pitch the 8th inning in front of Craig Kimbrel, a role that used to belong to Venters until he struggled badly at the start of the 2012 season. O'Flaherty was outstanding last season with a 1.73 ERA and has an ERA+ of 203 over 248.1 innings since joining the Braves before the 2009 season. Former San Francisco Giants closer Brian Wilson is among the pitchers who has had Tommy John surgery twice. He underwent the surgery in April 2012 and although a typical recovery time is around 12 months, it has been suggested that he will not throw for teams until the All-Star Break, 15 months after he underwent the surgery. A similar timeframe for Venters would mean he misses over half of the 2014 season, even if he is able to return. Follow @mlbinjurynews Looking for fantasy baseball advice?

Braves Schedule Has Been an Ass

The Braves have had a difficult early season schedule After starting out 12-1, the Braves are now only 22-18 on the season, and have won only 10 of their last 27 games.  When you look closer at the numbers it is a mixed bag.
