7 HR, 22 RBI, .310 BA, .360 OBP, .644 SLG These are all numbers you would expect from Jose Bautista after 22 games, except that’s the line for Edwin Encarnacion. The Toronto Blue Jays DH is carrying the Jays on his back while the rest of the team sorts out their struggles. Last year Bautista batted over .360 with nine home runs and 15 RBI in the month of April. His slugging percentage nearly topped .800. Oh how things have changed. The heart and soul of this Blue Jays offense, is mired in a slump, the likes that fans in Toronto haven’t seen before out of their superstar; three home runs, 10 RBI, .190 BA, .333 OPS and .329 SLG. The numbers you see are very uncharacteristic for the two-time defending home run champion. While unusual, it shouldn’t be any surprise. This year’s crop of pitchers are definitely pitching Bautista differently than last year. Their game plan has changed and his patience and timing are being put to the test right before our eyes. Bautista is ...

Just so you know . .

I try, for the most part, to focus the content of this blog almost entirely on the Blue Jays and their system. You know by now that i refrain from comments on other baseball teams for the most part, except as how they relate to the Jays, or on other sports at all. Also, with the occasional rare exception i don't talk much about what's going on in my life or what else I...

A hot Bautista could send Jays soaring

Don't feel lonely, Albert. You're in great company: Jose Bautista finished April with a .181 batting average. "Albert is probably the best offensive player, ever, in the first 11 years of anybody's career," Bautista told me Tuesday, after the miserable month (finally, mercifully) drew to a close. "I'm not worried about Albert. I'm sure he's...

Fantasy Focus: How do I deal with slumping stars?

Tomorrow the calendar is going to turn to May. It isn’t Memorial Day yet, but patience is running thin for a lot of fantasy owners. Obviously, where you are in the standings plays into that a lot. If you happen to be unlucky enough to be near the bottom of your league’s standings, those “it’s still early” chants are beginning to turn into sweat bands. Every...
