On Sunday afternoon, the Miami Marlins got exactly what they wanted out of top prospect Jose Fernandez. At only 20 years and 250 days old, Fernandez became the youngest pitcher ever to start a game in Marlins history. Along the way, he set a Marlins rookie debut record for strikeouts in his career opener, fanning eight New York Mets in five innings. Fernandez seemed poised from the get-go, retiring the first ten batters he faced before a Daniel Murphy single in the fourth inning. In those first ten hitters, Fernandez struck out five, with four of those punch-outs by swings. He would get into his first jam in the fourth after walking Ike Davis to put runners on first and second with two outs, but he got Mike Baxter to ground one back to the mound to end the inning. The only blemish on Fernandez’ run column was a one out RBI double by Mets backup catcher, Anthony Recker, in the fifth inning.
