Detroit Tigers ace Justin Verlander did what he always does. Verlander has a 15-2 record with a 2.56 ERA in 25 starts against the Kansas City Royals and he dominated again, with seven shutout innings, giving up just three singles and not permitting a runner past first. He struck out eight and walked two, while throwing 117 pitches.“Probably my best start of the season. I’m not exactly where I want to be, but pretty doggone close.”Tigers manager Jim Leyland handed a 2-0 lead to the Tigers bullpen. Drew Smyly pitched a one-hit eighth, then allowed a leadoff single in the ninth to Hosmer and was replaced by closer Jose Valverde. Then Valverde did what he does all to frequently. He gave up a tying, two-run homer to Lorenzo Cain with two outs in the ninth inning. The Tigers’ bullpen has a 4-12 record with eight blown saves. An inning later the Royals scored again to steal a 3-2 win over the Tigers.“No closer wants a blown save,” Valverde said. “Nobody wants that. It’s part of the game. The closer wants to save the game, not lose the game.”“Verlander showed why he’s the horse today,”  Leyland said. “He was terrific, absolutely terrific. He stepped up today. That’s the way he’s been the seven years I’ve been here.”As for Valverde, “It was a high split,” Leyland said about the home run pitch. “It didn’t split too good and the kid hit it out of the ballpark”While Valverde continues to serve up reminders of last October’s meltdown, he has now allowed five home runs in his last 51⁄3 innings. The options for replacing him are limited.Bruce Rondon who was given that opportunity in the spring has been working his way back to the Motor City in Toledo and may be ready for another chance. Rondon has pitched in 23 games for the Mud Hens. He has an 0.77 earned-run average, has allowed nine hits in 231⁄3 innings, with 29 strikeouts and 12 walks.Another option could be to move set up man Joaquin Benoit to the closers role. The trade deadline is July 31 and may present an opportunity for the Tigers to upgrade. For now Valverde is right, no closer wants a blown save, but then again, no team wants a closer who blows saves.

We all know it’s not about how you start, but it’s how you finish that defines who you are. If that’s the case, the Detroit Tigers are like an unsolved mystery with having Jose Valverde as their closer. In 12 of the opportunities...

Tigers sticking with Jose Valverde as closer

credit: getty images  Jose Jim Leyland did not give Jose Valverde a strong vote of confidence but said that the 35-year-old will continue to act as the Tigers closer. “We’re going to use Jose Valverde until we decide Jose Valverde can or can’t do it or we’ve got somebody else better,” said Leyland. Signed to a minor league deal at the start of the season the Tigers have...

Detroit Tigers Dilemma: Jose Valverde Edition

The Detroit Tigers are one of the most talented teams in baseball and are expected by many to represent the American League in the World Series and many are picking them to go on to win the World Series. Those expectations may only be dreams however, as the Tigers have a dilemma that no team in baseball is envious of, what to do with Jose Valverde and their closer role? The...

Valverde loses lead for Verlander, KC tops Tigers

Justin Verlander did his part, shutting down the Kansas City Royals. Once he left, the Detroit Tigers ran into trouble. Jose Valverde gave up a tying, two-run homer to Lorenzo Cain with two outs in the ninth inning, then Eric Hosmer hit a winning single in the 10th that lifted the Royals over Detroit 3-2 Wednesday. ''No closer wants a blown save,'' Valverde said...

Time for Tigers to stop kidding themselves about Jose Valverde

A quick glance at the MLB standings might lead you to believe that everything is fine with the Detroit Tigers. As of June 13, Detroit has a 4.5-game lead over the Cleveland Indians, the largest first-place margin in the American League and second-largest in the majors. The Tigers also have the best run differential in the league, scoring 81 runs more than they've allowed....

Leyland says people are focused on the wrong things and the team will use Valverde until it’s determined he can’t get the job done

Coming on the heels of a Jose Valverde blown save the other night in Kansas City, Tigers manager Jim Leyland was apparently very animated in the pregame talk with the media Friday afternoon in Minnesota. According to Chris Iott of Mlive.com, Leyland gave his comments regarding the Valverde question when it comes to the 9th inning and whether or not people are focused on the right...

Dombrowski must address closer issue

For nine months it has been apparent that the Detroit Tigers need a closer. Yet, during this period, Detroit GM Dave Dombrowski has unsuccessfully tried to reassure us that the Tigers lack of a proven closer wasnt as critical as most of us perceived. First, Dombrowski tried to sell raw rookie Bruce Rondon as the answer - only to have that experiment blow up during spring training...

Regner: Dombrowski makes rare mistake

For nine months, it's been pretty obvious the Detroit Tigers need a closer. Yet, during this period, Tigers GM Dave Dombrowski has unsuccessfully tried to reassure us that the Tigers' lack of a proven closer isnt as critical as most of us perceive. First, Dombrowski tried to sell raw rookie Bruce Rondon as the answer -- only to have that experiment blow up during spring...

Preview: It's Shields vs. Verlander in series finale

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) -- Justin Verlander has not been very sharp of late, but he's still putting the Detroit Tigers in position to win. The right-hander tries for a fifth straight winning start by continuing his success against the host Kansas City Royals on Wednesday. Verlander (8-4, 3.71 ERA) has won four in a row despite giving up 32 hits and posting a 4.85 ERA. He has...

Verlander did not allow a batter past first base, giving up three singles,...

Tigers need a closer they can trust

There's no doubt that Detroit Tigers president and general manager Dave Dombrowski and his staff are already working -- and have been working -- on a replacement for closer Jose Valverde. For now, the Tigers will have to turn to someone else with the game on the line in the ninth. The most likely candidate for now has to be veteran Joaquin Benoit, who already has three saves...

Jim Leyland: Expletive expletive I have no one to close games expletive times infinity

Jose Valverde is not the answer at the back end of the Tigers’ bullpen. Anyone who knows anything about baseball knows this to be fact. Jim Leyland knows something about baseball (how much depends on who you ask), but he was recently asked about the Tigers’ closer situation. “Some fans believe Valverde is a Leyland creation.  They think the manager loves him or he wouldn...

Royals celebrate walk-off win against Tigers in a weird way (GIF)

The Tigers bullpen combined to take a seven inning shut out start by Justin Verlander Wednesday afternoon and flush it down the toilet.  But they didn’t just choose your garden variety mostly-clean toilet at someone’s place of residence.  Instead, they found the nastiest public toilet on the face of the planet. Tigers “closer” (and I only use that term because they do)...

TDSS Roundtable: Jonathan Papelbon or Drew Smyly a Better Closer Option Than Jose Valverde?

lakelandlocal, Flickr Jose Valverde cost the Detroit Tigers another win on Wednesday, coughing up a two-run lead in the ninth inning en route to a 3-2, 10-inning loss to Kansas City. Even though Jim Leyland continues to stand his ground on Valverde as the closer, it’s apparent that the Tigers cannot get by like this for much longer. So, what’s Plan B? (Or Plan C, if Bruce Rondon...
