Justin Verlander kept the door open for an appearance in the upcoming 2013 World Baseball Classic. But on Monday, about 24 hours before the Detroit Tigers’ pitchers and catchers were to report for spring training, Verlander put that notion to bed.

Verlander’s presence would have been a big boost for a USA roster that currently features a projected starting staff of R.A. Dickey, Derek Holland, Ryan Vogelsong and Kris Medlen — starters have to operate on a pitch count, per tournament rules.
The Tigers may not be all that disappointed that Verlander will skip the event and stay with his team in Lakeland. Several other Detroit players, including Miguel Cabrera, will suit up for the tournament.
