ESPN’s resident prospect guru has released his Top 100 list for 2012 and the Cleveland Indians have a lone representative among a list featuring names like Mike Trout and Bryce Harper.  Francisco Lindor, the team’s first-round draft selection in 2011 slots in 35th overall, apparently being weighed down by the fact that he’s only 19-years of age. Per Law: The Puerto Rican-born Lindor was one of the youngest prospects in last year’s draft, and was also one of its only true shortstops, making him a top-10 pick in a loaded class. Lindor has four tools for certain, with power the only real question. He has very soft hands and easy actions at shortstop, with range in both directions, a plus arm, and quick feet that should also result in strong stolen base totals. At the plate, he keeps his hands inside the ball extremely well and has good hand speed, projecting to hit for average and doubles power down the road. He grew over the course of his senior year in high sc...

Don't be so weary of the Indians' lefty-laden lineup

Kotchman not the right-handed option many were hoping for (photo: MLB)The talk of the Cleveland offseason, long before, really, has been a lack of right-handed hitters in the Indians' lineup in general, but especially a lack of power from the right side.It is no secret that exactly zero of the team's projected regular position players are strictly right-handed, as only switch...

Setting the Lines for the 2012 Indians

I like very much when people take firm and decisive stands on things.  For example, “I don’t drink. It’s against my religion.” Or “I’m a vegetarian; it’s the only ethical stance to take.” Or “I believe that Gremlins are real and breeding in the sewers of Montreal.” I bring this up not because I am one of these principled folks—only that I admire them.  For...

Asdrubal Cabrera, Indians agree at 4.55 million

CLEVELAND (AP) -- All-Star infielder Asdrubal Cabrera and the Cleveland Indians have agreed to a 4.55 million, one-year contract and avoided salary arbitration. The agreement Friday was 75,000 above the midpoint between the 5.2 million he had asked for in arbitration last month and the 3.75 million the Indians had offered. A hearing had been scheduled for next week. Cleveland&...

Player Profile #59: Shin-Soo Choo | OF | CLE

Shin-Soo Choo‘s 2011 season was most certainly a down year from his very consistent numbers from 2009-10. Choo was almost a lock for a .300 batting average, 20 homers, 20 steals and 80+ RBI and runs every season, which put him right around a top 10 outfielder. Unfortunately off-field issues and injuries made it difficult for Choo to repeat those numbers in 2011. His .259...

Player Profile #66: Asdrubal Cabrera | SS | CLE

After racing out of the gate last season, Asdrubal Cabrera came up limp down the stretch. His power was consistent all season (he hit either four or five homers in five of the six months), but his .293 average in the first half towered over his .244 mark after the All-Star Break. Cabrera is probably a .275-.290 hitter, and the 17 steals were no fluke, but I’m not sold on the...

Reviewing the Indians offseason

Grady Sizemore (Photo: AP)This time of year, fans are bundled up in warm clothes and blankets, watching the snow fall as they anxiously await the arrival of spring training. Although Old Man Winter’s wrath will still be felt in Cleveland in mid-February, in Goodyear, Arizona, home of the Indians spring training facilities, it will be baseball season. The sound of bats hitting...

Indians, Clippers Set Killer Bobblehead Slate for 2012

During the 2011 season, the Cleveland Indians bailed on bobblheads, claiming that attendance studies did not support the cost incurred by curating the sub-foot figurines.  While a Mike Hargrove “Human Rain Delay” bobble saw the light of day, that would be it for what would ultimately be a fun year in Wahoo Country.  But for 2012, bobbleheads are back. And in a very...

Around the Horn: Indians infielders

The Indians believe that strength up the middle is integral to a team's success. Shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera and second baseman Jason Kipnis represent an important part of that equation for the upcoming season.

As usual, Cleveland avoids arbitration | Baseball

Arbitration season for Cleveland ended Friday like each of the past 21, without the participation of the Indians. The team signed shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera to a one-year contract worth $4.55 million.

The Bryce Harper-Joe Namath thing

Earlier this week, Bryce Harper gave a candid interview to MLB.com’s Bill Ladson, in which he candidly suggested he might want to have a lifestyle like that of Joe Namath. Much credit for the historical knowledge. But still, an interesting choice. Quoting from Ladson: Read full article >>
