The five-time defending National League East champion Philadelphia Phillies have underachieved in the first two months of the 2012 season. They will enter Memorial Day weekend in last place. They have spent most of the month under the .500 mark.

But en route to their second straight win over the defending World Champion St. Louis Cardinals on Friday night, sparks flew in the dugout. Perhaps it was a much-needed sign of life from Charlie Manuel's slumping millionaires.

After Shane Victorino misplayed a deep fly ball-turned-triple to begin the bottom of the fourth inning -- and also failed to communicate on another fly ball that fell between him and right fielder Hunter Pence -- he got a verbal lashing from starting pitcher Cliff Lee in the visiting dugout at Busch Stadium.

"It's going to stay between us," Lee said, refusing to talk about it.

Victorino shooed away reporters. Although Manuel also failed to get into specifics, he didn't mind the fire he had to help break up.

"They had a little heated words, that's all right," Manuel said afterward. "It's good sometimes."

After Lee and the defense behind him turned a 2-0 lead into a 3-2 deficit, he also helped the Phillies rally back and take their third straight win. Lee led off the seventh with a single, his second hit of the night, and scored from first base when Juan Pierre followed two batters later with a double to left.

Although Lee hasn't won a game since Sept. 26, 2011, he scored the game-tying run that set up Friday's win in St. Louis. In the top of the 10th, Hunter Pence snapped the 3-3 tie by hitting his 11th home run of the season, an opposite field shot in the first pitch he saw from Jason Motte.

Although the Phils (24-23) remain in last place, they are back above .500. The Phillies have had a winning record for just four days in May.

"We just need to win some games -- it's what we need to do," Manuel said. "Hopefully we can continue."
