Matz continues to improve while staying healthy A few weeks ago, Mets fans saw something that they’ve been waiting years to see: two top-prospect arms mowing down Braves hitters. Matt Harvey and Zack Wheeler pitched both ends of a doubleheader, Wheeler, of course, making his big league debut. To say the future is bright for the Mets is an understatement, at least in terms of arms. In the system, fans are eager to see the development of Noah Syndergaard, Rafael Montero, Michael Fulmer, just to name a few. One prospect that has had a rough time of it the last few years has been Steven Matz. Taken in the second round in 2009, Matz has had to battle injuries his whole professional career. After an impressive start to 2012, Matz was shutdown due to shoulder issues. This year, he has been working with trainer Tom Truedson in an effort to stay healthy and keep his arm fresh. In his last outing on June 29, Matz...

We should all preach patience with Zack Wheeler

On Friday night in Milwaukee, Zack Wheeler made his fourth career start for the Mets. While it wasn’t a thing of beauty, Wheeler did collect his second win on the year nonetheless. Wheeler pitched the minimum five innings to qualify for the win. In those five innings, Wheeler gave up seven hits and three walks while striking out three batters. It’s amazing he gave up only three...

Mr. and Mrs. Met caught on 'Kiss-Cam' at Citi Field, Matt Harvey gets caught on street cam

Mr. Met didn't waste any time waiting to plant one on the Mrs. when the "Kiss-Cam" zoomed in on the couple sitting in the stands of Citi Field Wednesday night.  The pony-tailed baseball did a little runway strut for the camera after they locked lips(?). Your browser does not support iframes. On Tuesday, the mascots' favorite player, Mr. Matt — better known...

Matt Harvey and the Innings Limit: how should teams manage young pitchers?

Matt Harvey is having a fantastic second season for the New York Mets. He has pitched so well, and gone deep into so many games, that he is on course to throw well over 240 innings this year. As a result, they have already started talking about how they're going to make sure the 24-year-old doesn't get overworked. Although they're not committing to a 'hard...

The X Files: Harvey Is Otherworldly

Matt Harvey has the lowest ERA (2.25) among pitchers since 1921, whose first 27 major league appearances were all starts. Mike Mussina is second on that list (2.56 ERA). Harvey also has the best WHIP (0.95) of any pitcher since 1921 through his first 27 career starts. Only four other pitchers had a WHIP under 1.00 in their first 27 starts: Dick Hughes (0.96), Vida Blue (0.97...

Mets-Brewers Preview

Following a promising debut, top prospect Zack Wheeler hasn't been quite as sharp for the New York Mets. Perhaps a date with one of the worst teams in baseball can boost his confidence. The Mets will try to begin a nine-game road trip in positive fashion Friday night when they send the hard-throwing right-hander to the mound against the lowly Milwaukee Brewers. While he hasn...

Nieuwenhuis Goes Crazy, Davis Goes Insane, Wheeler Wins The Game!

KIRK, KIRK, KIRK, KIRK, KIRK, KIRK… What a comedy of errors we had in this one as the New York Mets walloped the Milwaukee Brewers by the score of 12-5 tonight at Miller Park. This was a fun game and I hope you all got a chance to watch it. I’m going to forego a retelling of all the many Brewer baserunning blunders and just get to the stuff we really care about – what did...
