On the way into Citizens Bank Park tonight, I predicted the Pirates would beat the Phillies 10-4. I'm at that point with this team. They entered the game at 34-40, so why would you believe they would beat a team that's played reasonably well this year? Well, for one night, they played like the Phillies we remember from the last five years, at least for the most part. In the night's 8-3 win that moved them percentage points out of last, Joe Blanton threw reasonably well in getting his seventh win (7-6, 4.87), the offense hit reasonably well, the bullpen pitched reasonably well, and they ran the bases aggressively, like they wanted to win. If the Phillies hadn't committed a couple of errors, I'd call it an ideal game. Even so, not too bad. I do feel like the Phillies need two of the next three against the Buccos, as I said they needed a 6-4 home stand, at a minimum, to feel good. The Phillies have 87 games to go, and have 35 wins. I'm saying they need...

Not even the return of Chase Utley could save the Phillies tonight, as the team fell to the Pirates 11-7 behind a hapless effort from the bullpen–a unit which has been the Achilles heel all season.

Pitching deep into almost every game, Cole Hamels of the Philadelphia Phillies is among the best. How does Miami compare after their ace has worked? The Apocalyptic Horsemen Stats are in my daily coverage.

Enough can not be said about Carlos Ruiz’s performance so far this year. It has been nothing short of amazing that a 33 year old catcher has stepped up the way that he has. After another 3-4 night at the plate, Ruiz is batting .361. That is not only tops for catchers or in the National League, but is the best in all of baseball. Chew on that for a minute.
With Ruiz’s bomb of...
What a lift the Philadelphia Phillies got today with the return of Chase Utley. You could feel the excitement in the stadium before the game, when Utley took the field, when he was announced for his first at bat, then when he hit a monster home run to right field.
The excitement was in the air. The Phillies were back! Ryan Howard will be back inside of 20 days! The top of the National...
When superstars go on a rehab assignment, they usually get everything they want, including which jersey number they get to wear. It seems like that doesn't happen in Philadelphia. The Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs mascot FeRROUS wears Chase Utley's No. 26, so Utley now has to wear No. 21 for the first time in his career when he begins his rehab assignment with the Triple-A Iron...
Cole Hamels left the diamond with a slender lead for the Philadelphia Phillies. Is he one of the players who will be traded for prospects?

After dropping both games of a day-night double-header yesterday, the Phillies were looking to shake off the rust and start off a four-game series with the Pirates on the right foot. Joe Blanton was looking for his seventh win on the season tonight, and would do so against Jeff Karstens.
Runs would be surprisingly easy to come by tonight for the Phillies. They can thank the Pirates...
Jimmy Rollins and the Phillies host the Pirates to close out their 10-game homestand. (Philliedelphia/Kevin Durso)
The make-or-break homestand that was to determine where this team stood as June came to a close has not been pretty so far. After winning two of three from the Rockies, the Phillies took the momentum from a magical walk-off off the bat of Jim Thome and crushed by being...
After a dreadful Sunday during which the Phillies lost two games to the Rays in spectacularly bad fashion, this team needed a break. And that break came in the form of the Pittsburgh Pirates. How do you spell relief? P-I-R-A-T-E-S!
The 8-3 win was a welcome sight, even if it did come at the expense of what appeared to be a little league team. Thankfully though, the Bucos took the...
Vance Worley took the hill tonight for the Phillies against lefty Eric Bedard of the Pirates. With the team playing more aggressive than ever this season, the remainder of this series is sure to be entertaining.

After a very disappointing series opener, the Pirates will look to rebound tonight against the hated Phillies. Other than in the Baltimore series, the Bucs have bounced back from defeats very well lately and have stayed away from the big losing streak. That’s...
The Pirates made three errors in the first inning. Jeff Karstens threw some meatballs. Joe Blanton had eight strikeouts. Rod Barajas got hurt. One of those days that's better off forgotten, if you ask me.
