It's unclear if Joe Mauer will be behind the plate for the Minnesota Twins on Tuesday night. If he is, Mauer could see a different Francisco Liriano from the last time they formed a battery when the visiting Twins and Kansas City Royals continue a three-game series. Mauer sat out Monday's 10-7 victory in the series opener after he showed up at Kauffman Stadium with a sore thumb suffered the day before in a 6-3 win at Cleveland. "I have no time frame," manager Ron Gardenhire told the Twins' official website about the superstar's status. "Day to day is what they told me, and that's where we'll be." Mauer has not caught Liriano (1-5, 7.20 ERA) since the left-hander yielded four runs over 2 2-3 innings of relief in a 10-6 loss to Detroit on May 25. Liriano, however, is back in an injury-plagued rotation with Minnesota (21-33) looking for answers with a major-league worst 6.20 starting ERA. Liriano made his first start since May 7 on We...

Twins' P Liriano looks to be back on track

Since being inserted back into Minnesota's starting rotation, Francisco Liriano has looked like the Liriano of old. Including Tuesday's start against Kansas City, Liriano has allowed just one run over his last 12 innings. But Liriano wasn't helped out at all by his offense Tuesday, as the Twins fell, 1-0, to Bruce Chen and the Royals. Still, it's an encouraging sign...

Mauer leaves game with mild thumb sprain

Minnesota Twins catcher Joe Mauer left Sunday's game against Cleveland with a mild right thumb sprain and is listed as day-to-day, the team announced on Twitter. Mauer, who was in the lineup Sunday as Minnesota's designated hitter, struck out in the seventh inning of Sunday's game. He was pinch hit for by Darin Mastroianni, who flew out to lead off the ninth inning....

Can Liriano Stay Down in the Zone Again?

Francisco Liriano turned some heads with his May 30th start against Oakland, in which he tossed six shutout innings with nine strikeouts. It was Oakland, though, and that leaves an obvious question heading into Tuesday night’s start against Kansas City: was it the lineup, or did Liriano actually turn a corner? It wasn’t just the strikeouts which stood out for Liriano last time...

Mauer third in all-star voting at catcher

Catcher Joe Mauer was the only Minnesota Twins player to crack the top five in any position for this year's All-Star Game voting after the first ballot update was announced Tuesday.Mauer is currently third among all American League catchers with 637,364 votes. How will Twins use highest pick since Mauer?

MINNEAPOLIS This week's Major League Baseball draft is an important one for the Minnesota Twins, and the organization knows it. The Twins hold the No. 2 overall selection, their highest pick since they took a kid named Joe Mauer No. 1 overall in 2001. But holding the second pick isn't the only reason this year's draft -- especially Monday's first day - is big for...

Mauer out of lineup again with bruised thumb

Twins catcher Joe Mauer was out of the starting lineup for the second straight game against the Royals with a bruised right thumb. Mauer hurt the thumb on a swing in Minnesota's series finale Sunday at Cleveland. The thumb was worse when he arrived in Kansas City on Monday, and Twins manager Ron Gardenhire said before Tuesday night's game that Mauer remains day to day. ...

Tribe looks to take series from Minnesota

The Cleveland Indians recently stood atop the AL Central as one the season's pleasant surprises. Poor performances from the starting rotation have quickly changed that, and Joe Mauer and the AL-worst Minnesota Twins would like to continue capitalizing. Justin Masterson will try to rebound from his worst outing of the year and help the Indians re-establish their dominance of the...

De Vries vies against fellow rookie in KC

Poor play at home has made it difficult for the Kansas City Royals to sustain any success, but coming off a series victory at Kauffman Stadium, they'll try to keep things going. The Royals could have a good chance to do so as they open a three-game series Monday night against the last-place Minnesota Twins, who may be without Joe Mauer as they look for a sixth win in seven games...
