The Miami Marlins lost their fifth straight game on Saturday as their interstate rivals won 13-4.   The Tampa Bay Rays now lead the 2012 Citrus two games to none with four to play.   The skid which has landed Miami in fourth place in the division is reminiscent of the team’s historically bad June in 2011.   On the month, the Marlins are now 2-6 following a May that saw them pick up a franchise record number of wins.

Carlos Zambrano struggled mightily before being removed with lower back stiffness.  It is not clear if the injury occurred prior to the game which would possibly be a reason for the poor outing.  Zambrano allowed seven runs in only two and a third innings which not only put the game out of reach early but forced manager Ozzie Guillen to exhaust his bullpen as well.   Chad Gaudin did most of the heavy lifting going four and two third innings while allowing two runs along the way.   After Gaudin, Sandy Rosario, Randy Choate and Steve Cishek saw time.    Only Choate fared well on the mound with the other two arms allowing runs in their time on the mound.  Rosario had the poorest outing of all surrendering three runs on four hits without retiring a batter.

All four of the Marlins’ runs came in the sixth inning and three of them came on one swing of the bat.  Justin Ruggiano who was 2-3 on the day hit his second home run of the season, a three run blast which trimmed the lead to 9-4 at the time.   Ruggiano, a former member of the Rays also doubled.     The other run batted in was courtesy of Giancarlo Stanton with a single, the Marlins’ right fielder also doubled in the game.

Miami will look to salvage one game in the series on Sunday with a scheduled pitching matchup of James Shields and Anibal Sanchez.
