Right-hander Mark Lowe and catcher Matt Treanor were added to the Texas Rangers' World Series roster before Wednesday night's opener against the St. Louis Cardinals. Treanor was on the roster for the first round of the playoffs. ''Bringing Treanor on, he gives us versatility,'' Rangers manager Ron Washington said. I have two catchers that are pretty good, and I like to use them in different ways, and Treanor gives us that versatility.'' Lowe also was added to last year's World Series roster after being inactive during the first two rounds of the postseason. ''If he wouldn't have come down with the hamstring injury, he'd have been on our roster. He's been working behind the scenes, it's been three weeks,'' Washington said. Texas removed right-handers Yoshinori Tateyama and Koji Uehara. ''That was tough, to call both of those guys in and to tell them that,'' Washington said.

Like Ryan, Rangers execs have intimidation factor

ARLINGTON, Texas Say Nolan Ryan and one of two images usually spring to mind him whooping Robin Ventura or one of his 5,714 strikeouts, which one depending upon on age and geography. Nolan Ryan is for many an action verb a fiery, fastball-throwing, Cowboy hat-wearing Texan always ready to go all John Wayne on a problem. The irony is this is exactly what he did not do upon joining...

Rangers vow this World Series will be different

The Texas Rangers were the darlings of baseball in 2010. Texas overcame manager Ron Washington's drug-use admission, bankruptcy and a history of playoff follies to reach the World Series for the first time in franchise history. That's when the Rangers went from darlings to ugly ducklings as they were overmatched in five games by the San Francisco Giants. As the Rangers...

Rangers prop up Nolan Ryan's prediction with win

Nolan Ryan must have been getting a tad uncomfortable as the innings ticked by Thursday night and the Rangers crept ever closer to a two-game World Series deficit.

Crucial decisions go against Rangers

ST. LOUIS Texas manager Ron Washington has never been one to shy away from playing his instincts over the percentages. He's the same manager who jokes before games that his lineup is whatever comes out of his pen. He also loves to play his gut in the face of conventional wisdom. The gut didn't pay off in Game 1 of the World Series Wednesday night, as the moves the Rangers...

Oh Nellie! Rangers OF Cruz is This Week’s Sports Dreamboat

If chicks do indeed dig the long ball, well then Nellie Cruz was probably busy this past week. Your ALCS MVP decided to get red hot against the Tigers, and connect for 6 HRs total in the series. The stats don’t lie Cruz hit .364, 6 Bombs, and 13 RBIs. All of his 8 hits went for extra bases. Behind Cruz’s efforts, the Rangers are headed to the World Series to face the...

Oh Those Base on Balls

The Cardinals beat the Rangers 3-2 in game one of the 2011 World Series. The difference in the game turned out to be the walks. The Rangers pitchers walked six batters, all by C.J. Wilson. The last one, in the sixth inning, brought up Allen Craig to pinch hit, and he delivered the game winning RBI. Wilson failed to go after Nick Punto, a career .249 hitter, and it cost the Rangers...

Groaning Groin

Josh Hamilton admits his groin is in bad shape: Hamilton said he will play with the groin injury throughout the remainder of the World Series with the problem but that “if this were the regular season, I’d probably be on the DL.” Kudos to Josh for playing through pain, but he should probably be dropped in the Rangers batting order.

Bullpens provide big postseason relief for Cardinals, Rangers

The Texas Rangers didn't get a win from a starting pitcher in the ALCS. OK, the importance of a pitcher's win total is overrated, you say. But also consider that, in six games against the Detroit Tigers, none of the Rangers' four starters went past the sixth inning. And only Matt Harrison could keep his ERA under 6.35. Starting pitching didn't perform much better...
