SURPRISE, Ariz. (AP) -- Yu Darvish was scratched from his start because of a mild neck strain and Derek Lowe filled in with three scoreless innings, leading the Texas Rangers to an 8-2 win over the Kansas City Royals on Monday night.
The Rangers scratched Darvish, the Japanese star who won 16 games as a rookie, with what the club termed a "very minor" neck strain. Darvish said if it was a regular-season game he would have made the start.
Ian Kinsler went 3 for 3 with a two-run homer for Texas.
Lowe, who signed a minor league contract March 6 with the Rangers, yielded three singles, walked one and struck out three against a Royals club that entered the game with a spring training-best .335 batting average.
Ervin Santana, acquired in an offseason trade with the Los Angeles Angels, allowed six runs on 10 hits in four innings.

The American League West isn't exactly a hot bed for catchers.
The best catcher in the West in 2013 didn't even play in the division last year as Texas catcher A.J. Pierzynski came over from the Chicago White Sox via free agency.
Pierzynski is the only No. 1 catcher in the division who caught more than half of his team's games last season, which is one of the reasons...
LAS VEGAS (AP) -- Robbie Ross excelled out of the bullpen last year for the Texas Rangers. He hopes to do the same as a starter in 2013.
Mitch Moreland hit a two-run homer off Carlos Villanueva, Ross pitched three scoreless innings and the Texas Rangers beat the Chicago Cubs 8-5 in a matchup of split squads.
Ross didn't make things easy on himself, though, stranding six runners...

I’ll be on the lookout for that Showalter punkwad, so I can ask once again why he pulled his Texas Rangers starters on the last game of the season, years back, so the Angels would win and get home field advantage over the Yankees in the playoffs. I wanna hear what Mr. Baseball tells people about that day, how he claims to be Professor Old School, then he pulls his starters to determine...
