When asked about who his starting second baseman would be on Opening Day, Mets manager Terry Collins said, “There’s no reason to think Hernandez wouldn’t be the guy, if that’s who we think is going to be best for us. I like his enthusiasm. I love his defense. I like the fact that he switch-hits and he’s a baseball player.”
Luis Hernandez is a 26 year old infielder who has already been a part of 4 different organizations. He was drafted by the Atlanta Braves, claimed off waivers by the Baltimore Orioles, signed as a free agent by the Kansas City Royals, and then signed as a free agent by the New York Mets.
Hernandez only has 265 career major league at bats in 120 games. In his career, Hernandez has 3 HR and 20 RBI to go along with his .245 AVG. In 9 seasons in the minor leagues, Hernandez has only 17 HR and hit just .255.
