Joe Maddon of the Tampa Bay Rays and Kirk Gibson of the Arizona Diamondbacks received their respective league's manager of the year award on Wednesday.

Maddon received the honor for the second time after his Rays overcame a nine-game deficit in September to surpass the Boston Red Sox and clinch the American League wild card.

Maddon received 26 of 28 first-place votes to outdistance Jim Leyland of the Detroit Tigers and Ron Washington of the Texas Rangers, who received one first-place vote apiece.

Gibson received 28 of the 32 first-place votes to outdistance Milwaukee Brewers skipper Ron Roenicke, who claimed three votes. World Series champion St. Louis Cardinals manager Tony La Russa received one vote.

Gibson helped Arizona rebound from a last-place finish in the National League West in 2010 to the division title in 2011. The Diamondbacks won 94 games to secure their first playoff berth since 2007. The club went on to lose to the Brewers in the National League Division Series.
