The Tigers continued their push towards the postseason Monday night with a 4-2 win over the Seattle Mariners in the opener of a three game series from Comerica Park.
Rick Porcello was stellar in the outing going six innings allowing one run one and five hits while striking out an uncharacteristic 10 batters. Joaquin Benoit came in during the 9th to record his 21st save of the season.
Detroit got things going early taking a 1-0 lead in the first inning after Torii Hunter was able to take cross the plate off a Joe Saunders wild pitch. Abraham Almonte would tie things up at one in the third after he golfed his second career home run into the right field seats.
Saunders would then settle in to a small grove until the the 6th inning when Victor Martinez and Omar Infante were able to plate Miguel Cabrera and Prince Fielder respectively to give the Tigers a 3-1 lead.
