Lynn, Mass. – The North Shore Navigators of the Futures Collegiate League added three more players to their 2012 roster on Thursday: sophomore infielder Cody Slader (photo right) and freshman third baseman Ryan Muno(photo left), both of San Diego State University; and Lynnfield native Alex Markakis, a sophomore from St. Joseph’s College in Maine. Slader and Muno are coached at SDSU by baseball Hall of Famer Tony Gwynn, while Markakis is the cousin of Baltimore Orioles outfielder Nick Markakis.
^^^ Markakis (mar-KAH-kis) has had a hot start to the young 2012 college season, hitting .429 with two doubles and four RBI. In the second game of Thursday’s doubleheader against Curry, he went 2-for-4 with a double in his team’s 5-2 victory, improving the Monks’ record to 6-1. As a freshman in 2011, Markakis’ .310 average was fourth-best on the team; St. Joseph’s went 32-15 on the season, winning the Great Northeast Conference and reaching the NCAA regionals.

He played high school baseball for Pat Yanchus at St. John’s Prep in Danvers, helping the team to the Eastern Massachusetts finals his junior and senior seasons. He also played in the Bay State Games, at the Lynn Invitational, and for the Wakefield American Legion team.

Slader, a native of Castro Valley, Calif., has appeared in 14 of San Diego State’s 17 games so far this season, hitting .250 with 4 RBI for the 9-8 Aztecs. As a freshman in 2011, he was the team’s primary shortstop, playing in 41 games and putting together a .972 fielding percentage. During the summer of 2011, Slader played for the Fairbanks Goldpanners of the Alaska League, where he hit .308 in 26 games with three doubles and a pair of triples.

After a standout high school career at Mission Viejo (Calif.) High, Muno, of La Quinta, Calif., has already made his presence felt at SDSU, starting in 13 games and getting base knocks in 5 of his first 8 collegiate at-bats.

Markakis, Slader, Muno and the Navigators start their first season in the Futures League 2012 on June 7, with the team’s home opener June 8 against the Torrington Titans at Fraser Field at 7 p.m.
