I missed the entire Detroit series (which the Rangers ended up winning) and returned to viewing tonight.  I would like to exchange this game for yesterday’s.  Or maybe Saturday’s.  Yeah, definitely Saturday’s.  I want to see Mike Olt’s walk-off single.  But no.  I didn’t get to see any of that.  Instead, I got bad Ryan Dempster and a mostly flat Rangers offense. The game got off to a good start.  The Rangers scored one run in each of the first two innings, and Dempster didn’t allow a single baserunner in those frames. It all came unraveled in the 3rd. Dempster quickly loaded the bases on two singles and a one-out walk.  It was all set up perfectly for Nick Swisher’s home run.  As if that wasn’t enough, Dempster decided to load the bases again.  At least only one more run scored.  But I was completely deflated. The Rangers’ offense seemed to be too. They managed just three hits the rest of the game. And I really don’t have much more to say.   KISS: David Murphy. 2 for 4 with a

Ryan Dempster’s Early AL Struggles

Ryan Dempster’s performance last night against the New York Yankees only fueled the argument for fans doubting that he can be a dominant pitcher in the American League.  Dempster gave up nine hits and eight runs (two homers) in six innings of work last night in the Bronx. Dempster was acquired by the Texas Rangers on July 31st with only minutes remaining before MLB’s trade deadline...

Texas Picther Ryan Dempster Gets Hammered By Yankees

Ryan Dempster didn’t want to have an outing like the one the New York Yankees handed him last night. Dempster gave up 9 hits and 8 runs as both the Yankees and the Texas Rangers were trying to get their 68th win. The Yankees would take this game 8-2 and the Rangers will have to look for their 68th win tonight to tie the Yankees at 68-47 on the season. Dempster pitched for 6 innings...

MLB ready for next "can't miss" rookie?

You might be thinking to yourself that the name "Jurickson Profar" rings a bell. It should. Last month, during the lead up to the MLB trade deadline, the Texas Rangers were looking at a number of candidates to strengthen their team for another World Series push. But Texas held up from making any blockbuster deals because the player ever team wanted in return from the...

Napoli's injury catches Rangers short behind plate

The Texas Rangers have a catching quandary. On Saturday, Mike Napoli headed to the disabled list with a strained quadriceps that has bothered him off and on for weeks. With very little experienced catching in the minors, the club has turned to Luis Martinez as the backup. Martinez was up for a week in July, but was not given an at-bat. He hit .211 with a .614 OPS in 59 at-bats...

The Quantity and Quality of Napoli’s Contact

Mike Napoli was, at least at the time, an under-discussed portion of not only one of the worst trades of recent times, but also the puzzling follow-up trade in which the Jays sent Napoli to the Rangers for reliever Frank Francisco. Even given that at the time Napoli was not projected to be the monster he turned to be in 2011, that seems really weird given that his hitting style seemed...

Profar not far away from majors

It appears it's not a question of if Jurickson Profar gets called up this season, but when. Both Texas Rangers club president Nolan Ryan and general manager Jon Daniels said the possibility exists that the 19-year-old shortstop, who is currently considered the second-best prospect in all of baseball by Baseball America, will be called up before Sept. 1. "It's a consideration...

Rangers-Yankees Preview

While the short-term goal for Ryan Dempster is to continue finding a comfort zone with the Texas Rangers, the bigger picture is helping his team hold off the New York Yankees for the best record in the AL as the division leaders meet in the Bronx on Monday to start a crucial four-game series. Both the Rangers (67-46) and Yankees (67-47) have comfortable cushions atop their respective...

Rangers 8, Tigers 3

Josh Hamilton hit his 32nd homer and drove in three runs, Yu Darvish struck out eight and the Texas Rangers beat the Detroit Tigers 8-3 Sunday. Hamilton had a two-run drive in the first inning to take the major league lead in home runs. He added an RBI single in the third to give him 99 RBIs, which is also tops in baseball. Yu Darvish (12-8) allowed six hits and walked five in...

Cubs' offense goes south during 1-11 stretch

There are new faces all over Wrigley Field, but the results are starting to have an old, familiar look. And that's not good. The Chicago Cubs fell 3-0 to the Cincinnati Reds on Sunday. And while many observers felt pitching would be a problem after the trades of Ryan Dempster and Paul Maholm and the elbow injury to Matt Garza, it's the hitting that's been the biggest...
