The rolling of managerial heads has begun a week before the end of the season with the firing of Manny Acta as Cleveland Indians manager. He'll be replaced by his bench coach and former long-time Indians catcher Sandy Alomar Jr for the rest of the season.

Acta just didn't work out during his three year stint as Indians manager, replacing Eric Wedge prior to the 2010 campaign. Acta's record with Cleveland was 214-266, and the Tribe lost at least 90 games in two of his three seasons, never finishing above .500. This season, the Indians are 65-91, tied for the worst record in the American League with their division rivals in Minnesota.

The Indians have also collapsed in the second half in each of the last two seasons with Acta at the helm. Last season, Cleveland went 33-40 after the All-Star Break to finish 80-82 and 15 games back of the Tigers in the division after being just a half game back at the break. This year, the Indians have gone a pathetic 21-50 since the break, going from three games back to 18.5 games back. Not all of this can be blamed on Acta, but the manager is the easiest person to blame after a season like this.

In addition to Acta's tenure in Cleveland, he also had two and a half disappointing years in Washington, finishing 158-252 during his time in DC. At just 43 years old, his managerial career is likely far from over, but he'll need to step into a better situation than either of those clubs for his next job. It doesn't look like teams that trend younger are a good fit for him, and he could be a nice option in a bigger market with a more established roster...of course, if the media doesn't eat his hiring alive. As for next year, I'd expect Acta to be a coach for a team before easing his way back into the managerial ranks.
