Baltimore Orioles third baseman Manny Machado underwent reconstructive surgery on his left knee Monday and is likely to miss Opening Day in 2014 as a result. Machado’s surgery included arthroscopy and an open reconstruction of the medial patellar femoral ligament. It went “as expected” but his recovery was given a timetable of six months, instead of the four to six months that was originally forecast when surgery was announced. Machado is expected to miss all of spring training and that means there’s almost no way he’ll be ready for Opening Day. The 21-year-old phenom will rehab for a few weeks in California – where the surgery was done – then he’ll head back to Miami to continue it. Dan Duquette, Baltimore’s vice president for baseball operations had the following to say about the situation: The goal would be to have him ready for Opening Day, but the real goal is to stabilize Manny. What needs to be done needs to be done for Manny to return to full baseball activities. So he’s got some work to do with his rehab, which I’m sure Manny will tackle with great vigor. Machado established himself as one of the best young players in baseball this season for the surprising Orioles. In 156 games he hit .283. with 14 home runs, 71 RBIs and an American League-best 51 doubles. His also posted 189 hits, an OPS of .746 and a WAR of 6.5. The Orioles need to be careful with Machado’s rehab, since he is the future of their franchise. Expect Baltimore to allow him to take as much time as he needs to recover.   The post Manny Machado has surgery, likely to miss Opening Day in 2014 appeared first on Midwest Sports Fans.
