Do you think Charlie Manuel had cued up some vintage LL Cool J before the manager met the press after the Phillies game on Friday? After being pressed by a longtime Philly sports media provocateur, Howard Eskin, about the Phillies' lack of offense, Manuel was leaving the podium when Eskin asked him one last question: "When are you going to score 10 runs?" Manuel responded: "When I knock you out, that's when." (Now you get the LL Cool J reference -- "Mama Said Knock You Out." ) Manuel is 69, an age when he should be growling at kids to get off his lawn rather than talking about knocking anyone out. But this wasn't the first time the two of them had a confrontation. In 2007 , Manuel and Eskin got into a shouting match in the manager's office after Eskin challenged Manuel to be tougher on his players. Manuel apparently wanted to knock him out that time, too. After all, that's what J's mama said to do.

Top 10 reasons why Charlie Manuel is questioning whether the Phillies can make a run

Um, Were 10) Have not done much with the momentum gained from the thrice-annual return of Chase Utley from the disabled list 9) Should actually have a worse record based on run differential and the number of times they've already played the Marlins, so they've actually been lucky so far this year 8) Philly Fan is already starting to look past this team for the option of...

Roy Halladay feels good so far after light tossing

Philadelphia Phillies' pitcher Roy Halladay, who has been on the disabled list since May 6 and had shoulder surgery on May 15, has been light tossing and feeling good so far. As reported by Todd Zolecki at MLB.com, "The Phillies are hopeful Halladay, who will see a doctor again on Thursday, will pitch again before the end of the season, although a potential return...

Phillies' Mike Stutes lands on the DL

The Philadelphia Phillies can add another name to their ever-growing list of injured players.  Mike Stutes is heading for the disabled list with a biceps issue.  His placement on the DL forces the Phillies to call up Phillippe Aumont from Triple-A. Phillies place RHP Mike Stutes on the DL with right bicep tendinitis and recall RHP Phillippe Aumont from triple-A Lehigh Valley...

Phillies Get Papelbombed for Fourth Time in a Week

Prior to this past week, Jonathan Papelbon had converted all 13 of his save opportunities. But last night against the Padres, he dropped another bomb on the Phillies; it was his 4th blown save in his last 5 attempts. Red alert! The Phillies have been Papelbombed! Worse than that, starting pitcher Cliff Lee took a 3-0 lead into the 9th inning before the bomb dropped. After putting...

Mike Adams May Need Surgery; Could He Have Thrown Last Pitch For The Phillies?

The Phillies signed Mike Adams to be a stabilizing force in the Phillies bullpen in the eighth inning. Now it appears the Phillies will return to instability for a significant period of time as it is looking more and more that Adams could require surgery that few have recovered from...

FREDDY GALVIS: BUTTKICKER

I wanted to take a moment from my impending deportation from Chile to address Freddy Galvis' walk-off celebration. He kicks butts. He kicks them rather hard. I went back and reviewed the Phillies' walk off wins this year and Freddy kicks the man with the walk off hit right square...

Papelbon's Excuse- "Sh*t Happens"

*Mike Adams is likely done for the year with 3 tears in his right shoulder.  His 2 YR/$12M contract looks like a sunk cost now.  What does Amaro do right anymore?*Amaro doesn't know if the Phils with call up Zambrano or not because "he's been inconsistent".  Well, Lannan has been consistent...consistently bad.  Yet he's allowed to continue floundering in...

Padres rally against Lee, Papelbon

Kyle Blanks singled home the winning run in the 10th inning for his fourth hit of the game, and the San Diego Padres rallied from a three-run deficit in the ninth to beat the Philadelphia Phillies 4-3 Monday night. Blanks also had a two-run single and scored the tying run on a passed ball in the ninth as the Padres fought back against Cliff Lee and struggling closer Jonathan Papelbon...

Can The Starting Pitching Hold Up In Cleveland?

It’s no secret, if the Cleveland Indians are going to contend for a Wild Card bid or a division title, their starting pitching has to hold up. So far, it’s been a rollercoaster ride. As a team, the Indians are currently 23rd in the majors (and 10th in the American League) with a 4.24 earned run average. The Indians don’t have to be stellar from the mound; they just have to...

Phillies 6, Padres 2

Domonic Brown hit his 20th home run and tied a career high with four RBIs as the Philadelphia Phillies beat the San Diego Padres 6-2 Tuesday night. Kyle Kendrick (7-4) went eight innings, allowing two runs on seven hits with six strikeouts and no walks to pick up the victory. Jason Marquis (9-3), who had won eight straight decisions over his last 11 starts, went 4 1-3 innings,...

Notes From The Phillies’ 6-2 Win Over San Diego

About Last Night: I went to bed just before the implosion in San Diego

Cliff Lee was masterful last night in San Diego. Chase Utley hit a home run, Dom Brown flashed some leather in left field and the San Diego Padres looked to be no problem for the Phillies on the start of a ten game west coast swing. With the Phillies up 3-0 entering the bottom of the ninth and it already half past midnight I was growing so tired that I just could not manage to fight...

Phillies Weekly Preview, 6/24-6/30

Are we back in 1997? Why are we still writing about this team? I don't know, but I don't ever stop caring. Even at 36-40, even when Karma finally bit us and convinced us that we stunk, after losses to the Mets. PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES (36-40, NL East-3) @ SAN DIEGO...
