The day after the World Series ends is often a busy day for players electing to declare for free agency. That was the case Monday for three players that spent last season with the Milwaukee Brewers. Shortstop Alex Gonzalez, right-hander Shaun Marcum and reliever Francisco Rodriguez all officially elected for free agency. The Brewers also announced theyve activated first baseman Mat Gamel, left-hander Chris Narveson and Gonzalez from the 60-day disabled list. Gonzalez hit .259 with four homers and 15 RBI in 24 games with the Brewers in 2012 before tearing his ACL on May 5 in San Francisco. Signed as a free agent prior to the season, the 35-year-old had a vesting option that would have kicked in for 4 million if he had reached 525 plate appearances this past season. Marcum, 30, made just 21 starts for the Brewers in 2012 due to elbow tightness, tossing 124 innings, going 7-4 with a 3.70 earned run average. Acquired from Toronto prior to the 2011 season, Marcum went 20-11 with a 3.60 ERA in 324.2 innings with the Brewers. Rodriguez was an important cog out of the Brewers bullpen in 2011 after being acquired on July 12 of that year. He posted a 1.86 ERA in 29 innings, but was unable to duplicate that success in 2012. Rodriguez appeared in 78 games and threw 72 innings, but had a 4.38 ERA, went 2-7 with seven blown saves. The Brewers 40-man roster now stands at 36. Follow Andrew Gruman on Twitter.
