NorthWest Sports Beat:
Brendan Ryan the 30 year old all world short stop for the Seattle Mariners this week proposed to his long-time girlfriend on Tuesday.
The event took place on the Sky Deck on the 90th floor of Mori Tower in downtown Tokyo.
PER MLB.com Ryan told his girlfriend, Sharyn, they were going on a tour and needed to be dressed nicely.
"I had this planned for quite a while," said Ryan. "Once I heard we were going to Japan, I figured it was a pretty cool opportunity. Then MLB heard about it and stepped in and rolled out the red carpet for us and it was just awesome."
Apparently Ryan had asked Ichiro Suzuki's interpreter, Antony Suzuki, how to say "Will you marry me?" in Japanese.
MLB Baseball is underway for the Seattle Mariners. They've now played two games over in Tokyo. Winning 3-1 on Wednesday and losing 4-1 on Thursday to the Oakland Athletics.
The team now returns to Arizona for 5 more spring training games. (Yes crazy we know)
BEST OF MAXIM
The Mariners' season-opening trip to Japan provided shortstop Brendan Ryan with the perfect opportunity to pop the question, and Major League Baseball provided an assist.
The 30-year-old told his longtime girlfriend he would be taking her on a tour of the city Tuesday, but the guide was actually an employee of Major League Baseball who was in on the plan.

This week in Tokyo Seattle Mariners left fielder Mike Carp was placed on the 15-day disabled list. Not a great way to start your season.
Carp suffered the injury diving for a double hit by Kurt Suzuki of the Oakland A's in game 1 of the MLB 2012 season's opening series in the Tokyo Dome.
Your probably wondering how this came to be since Carp stayed in through the entire...
Dustin Ackley drove in the go-ahead run in the top of the 11th inning and Ichiro Suzuki went 4 for 5 as the Seattle Mariners beat the Oakland Athletics 3-1 Wednesday in baseball's season-opener in Tokyo.
Brendan Ryan doubled to lead off the 11th, advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Chone Figgins and scored on Ackley's single to center.
Suzuki then gave Seattle an insurance...
Sports make people do crazy things. Whether it’s the Little League father who feels the need to beat up a Little League umpire for calling a third strike on their six year-old son, or Bud Selig deciding to start the 2012 Major League Baseball season in Tokyo, Japan in the middle of spring training, sport causes insanity. As a fan of baseball and a writer of sports, I’ve...
Here were the bright spots for the 2011 Mariners: Felix Hernandez, and Dustin Ackley. That’s pretty much it. Ichiro, the face of the franchise, had a disappointing season, his worst in America. The rest of the pitching staff struggled, and #2 starter Doug Fister was dealt to the Tigers in July. In 2012, the Mariners have improved in places (most notably, with a full season of Ackley...
Ichiro looks good in pink
Hello all, and welcome to the first edition of my new weekly column titled The Mariners: Week That Was.
This is going to be a fun column, with lots of laughs, I hope, and other good stuff. Normally it will be a top 10 list, a la David Letterman, but since this was a short week, I’m starting off with five.
So here goes. I hope you all enjoy it, our first...
Hard to believe, but MLB’s 2012 season is about to unfold while most of America is asleep. The “Gloops Japan Opening Series 2012” (yes, “Gloops” is the title sponsor) starts Weds and ends Thursday when the Athletics and Seattle Mariners play at the Tokyo Dome.
But, many have asked when and where on the dial they can watch the game. Here’s the lowdown:
Live on ROOT...

Apparently, the Seattle Mariners superstar has a doppleganger and, naturally, he took it upon himself to show up at an autograph signing Monday...dressed exactly like the ten-time All-Star.
"I couldn't tell the difference," Saunders said. "It was unbelievable. Full uni, the facial hair...

Can Dustin Ackley capitalize on a strong rookie season and come back ready for more this year? What can Mariners fans expect from Montero? It's all right here in this preview of the 2012 Mariners. Find out what National Baseball Expert Frankie Piliere is expecting from Seattle in this video.
The Oakland Athletics and Seattle Mariners opened the 2012 MLB season early this morning before a sell-out crowd of 44,227 in the Tokyo Dome, Japan. The two game series was held in Japan to raise money for relief efforts to assist with the rebuilding in Japan following last year’s earthquake and tsunami. Clearly the attraction of the series is Ichiro Suzuki, who didn’t disappoint...
Photo Credit: Itsuo Inouye/Associated PressSince a first-place finish in the 2001 season, the Seattle Mariners have rarely sniffed first place in the A.L. West over the last decade, grabbing a pair of second-place finishes in that time frame. Is this the season that things...
NWSB Insider and Seattle Mariners blogger Jonathan Irwin reports on the second M’s game of the year in his Love ‘em & Hate ‘em. A 4-1 loss to the Oakland Athletics in Tokyo Japan. The bullpen gave up 3 runs on 5 hits. Shawn Kelley could only pitch 0.1 innings, while George Sherrill couldn't even get through an inning.
Baseball is here! Well, sort of. The Oakland A’s and Seattle Mariners began their season-long race for third place this week, and in the process gave the HardballChat crew a few minutes of conversation.
