The Seattle Mariners appear to be in the market for a first baseman with the word coming after Monday's game that Mike Carp is likely headed to the disabled list. Carp had to leave Sunday's game in Anaheim after stretching to catch a throw at first base, and he wasn't able to start Monday at home against the Tampa Bay Rays. Instead, he was being checked out by team medics. Carp said Sunday that he felt "something pop" in his hip, and an examination of the hip Monday confirmed, in the words of manager Eric Wedge "he does having something going on there." It's possible that Carp, currently the only first baseman on the roster, could be ready to play in just a few days, but the Mariners don't want him in the outfield because of the shoulder problems that have landed him on the disabled list twice previously this season. And now they don't want him at first base because the stretching he's likely to be asked to do could bring about a...

Mariners place Mike Carp on disabled list

The Seattle Mariners have placed first baseman Mike Carp on the 15-day disabled list because of a strained left groin muscle and recalled Justin Smoak from Triple-A Tacoma. Carp left Sunday's game at Los Angeles with discomfort after stretching for a throw in the fifth inning. He was hitting .308 with three doubles and a homer in his last 15 games and has a .206 this year with...

My oh My! Top play of the week for the Seattle Mariners (video)

Montero Mash x2 Oh how sweet it is to beat the Angels in Anaheim. Especially off of their pride and joy Jarred Weaver. Jesus Montero went yard not once, but twice, in the 2nd, and 6th innings respectively against Weaver. For the Mariners slugger, it was homeruns number 11 and 12 on the year. Even with Hector Noesi exiled to Tacoma, the Mariners are looking like the winners in the...

Smoak Up. Oh Well.

Mike Carp hit the DL, courtesy of the remarkable stretch he made below: The Mariners called up Justin Smoak to take his place. Smoak is a known commodity and got sent down because he wasn't hitting all that well. I saw him in Tacoma a few times, and he did not look much better to me. He did not hit a home run in 82 AAA plate appearances. The biggest difference...

Smoak gets another chance with Mariners

The Seattle Mariners never quite saw first baseman Justin Smoak get it together in 2010 when the club moved starting pitcher Cliff Lee to the Texas Rangers and got Smoak in return. Last year saw Smoak get off to a good start, but family health issues took him out of the lineup for a bit, and things didn't get going after that. He was hitting .189 this year when he was sent...

Mariners Minor League Report

Shortstop Nick FranklinPhoto Credit: Seattlepi.com It’s that time of year again. The season is winding down and once again the M’s are out of contention. But this is never a boring time of the year. As a matter of fact, quite the opposite. Now, we get to speculate and evaluate how the club’s top prospects are doing and who may get a September call-up to get his first taste...

Mariners Unable to Overcome Early Deficit Against Rays

Seattle Mariners starter Blake Beavan battled yet again on Monday night giving up 4 runs in 6 innings, striking out 4 and walking none. Prior to this start, Beavan had been on a roll winning 4 of his last 5 outings and only walking a whopping total of 2 batters in 34.1 innings, while striking out 24. His recent success was been tied to a retooling of mechanics and this appears to...

Mariners 3, Rays 2

Eric Thames' two-out single in the bottom of the ninth inning gave the Seattle Mariners a 3-2 victory on Tuesday night and snapped the Tampa Bay Rays' seven-game winning streak. Kyle Seager started the winning rally with a single to right field off Tampa Bay closer Fernando Rodney, and pinch-hitter Chone Figgins pushed a bunt that first baseman Carlos Pena fielded. Pena...
