The Mariners, once against getting swept up in injury issues, made another shakeup to their roster

before Friday's 5-0 loss to Boston.

Center fielder Franklin Gutierrez went on the 7-day disabled list less than 24 hours after being hit on

the right ear by a pickoff throw from Boston's Franklin Morales. Gutierrez spent the night in the hospital

as a precaution and returned home early Friday.

"We'll continue to monitor Guti from day to day," manager Eric Wedge said. "Obviously he got hit pretty

cleanly with that baseball. It was kind of a fluke thing. He's been on the south side of a number of fluke

things the last couple of years."

Gutierrez just returned to active status earlier this month after a pectoral muscle injury and a foot

injury combined to cost him the first two months of the season. He'd played in 13 games before going back

on the DL hours before the Mariners dropped a 5-0 decision to Boston.

Taking Gutierrez's place on the roster is reliever Steve Delabar, up with the Mariners for the third

time this season.

The Mariners brought up a reliever rather than an outfielder because they may need the extra help in the

bullpen over the weekend. Starter Kevin Millwood is being pushed back because of a groin injury and Hisashi

Iwakuma is being moved out of the bullpen to cover for him.
