According to a press release from the Seattle Mariners, they have signed left-hander Oliver Perez to a minor league deal that includes an invitation to Spring Training. Perez, 30, is a veteran of nine Major League seasons with San Diego (2002-2003), Pittsburgh (2003-2006) and New York-NL (2006-2010). He has a career record of 58-69 with a 4.63 ERA (572 ER, 1111.2 IP) with 628 strikeouts in 206 games including 195 starts. He did not appear at the Major League level in 2011. Perez appeared in 23 games, all in relief for the Tomateros de Culiacan in the Mexican Winter League this off-season, going 0-2 with a 0.63 ERA (1 ER, 14.1 IP) with 19 strikeouts. He spent the entire 2011 season with the AA Harrisburg Senators in the Washington Nationals organization. He went 3-5, 3.09 ERA (26 ER, 75.2 IP) with 58 strikeouts in 16 games including 15 starts. Perez was originally signed as an amateur free agent by the San Diego Padres on March 4, 1999. One word… YIKES!
