The Seattle Mariners will be flying the rainbow flag on Sunday during their game against the Chicago Cubs. A group called Seattle Out & Proud says the Mariners will be the first Major League Baseball team to publicly fly the gay pride flag. But Mariners spokeswoman Rebecca Hale says she cannot confirm that. The team has gotten a handful of comments about its plans, which were publicized by the group organizing Seattle's gay pride parade on Sunday. Hale says the Mariners are flying the rainbow flag at Safeco Field as a reflection of their place in the community.

Seattle Mariners: Closer by committee fails

The bullpen seems a little bit like a scape goat for the Seattle Mariners’ problems in 2013, but the facts are going against them.  After Tom Wilhelmsen came blazing out out of the gates, a bad June moved him out of the closer’s role and moved Seattle into a closer by committee.  Despite the insistence of some that the save is an overrated stat, the committee never seems to...

Mariners Call Up Top Prospect Brad Miller from Triple-A Tacoma

The Seattle Mariners have promoted shortstop prospect Brad Miller from Triple-A Tacoma, who will join the big league roster in time for a series against the Chicago Cubs.Miller will become the new starter at short for the Mariners, as Brendan Ryan will be moved into a backup role and Carlos Triunfel will be sent down to Tacoma to free up a spot on the 25-man roster. The second-round...

The Reason for Seattle Mariner Tom Wilhelmsen’s Struggles

Is Wilhelmsen’s bad fastball location leading to an inordinate amount of hard hit balls? Tom Wilhelmsen has amazing stuff.  He has a 95-97 mph fastball and probably the best curveball of any right hander in the MLB.  In 2012 he had an incredible season; 9.87 K/9, 29 saves, and a sparkling 2.50 ERA backed up by a 2.89 Fielder Independent Pitching (FIP) score, which demonstrated...

Mariners place Franklin Gutierrez on the DL

After having to exit Sunday's game with tightness in his leg, the Seattle Mariners have now placed Franklin Gutierrez on the disabled list.  Gutierrez is no stranger to the DL, but after having a great winter, there was hope that he could stay healthy for a full season and really contribute to the Mariners' season.  Hopefully, this injury is minor, but unfortunately with...

Raul Ibanez: Illustration of Principles

When you’re active on a site like FanGraphs, it’s easy to forget the majority of baseball fans don’t consume the game the way you do. Most people don’t know nearly so much about baseball analysis; most people don’t have the foggiest about UZR. More people, though, are writing about the game in an analytical fashion — meaning more people are being exposed to such analysis...

M’s Injured reserve: What to do with Gutierrez?

Human Glass There was a movie that came out in 2000 titled Unbreakable. Starring Samuel L. Jackson and Bruce Willis, the thriller by M. Night Shyamalan detailed the story of David Dunn (Willis) and his interactions with Elijah Price (Jackson). Though there is a large, broader, and emotional pull to the movie, an extremely brief summary will suffice for our purposes. In short, Dunn...

SS Brad Miller called up, will start against Cubs

The Seattle Mariners have selected infielder Brad Miller from Triple-A Tacoma and put him in the starting lineup for his major league debut Friday night against the Chicago Cubs. Seattle also optioned infielder Carlos Triunfel to Tacoma and designated infielder Alex Liddi for assignment. Miller was in the ninth spot in the lineup. He was on a 22-game hitting streak or Tacoma, hitting...

The Struggles of Carter Capps

Despite having huge velocity and a delivery that would lead you to believe he is tough to pick up, Carter Capps ranks among the least effective pitchers in Major League Baseball this year. Why is he struggling so badly, and what should the club do to try and fix him?

Raul Ibañez: Three Reasons To Love The Guy

It’s difficult to be a Seattle sports fan and live in New York.  I’ll never forget 2009, when the Yankees won their 27th World Series Championship and Pay-rod got his first (and hopefully last) ring.  Barf.  There was also Super Bowl XLVI in 2011 when the Giants won their fourth championship.  Ho-hum, yet another title. Then last year, I went to my first game at Yankee...

Mariners 5, Cubs 4(10)

Mike Zunino hit a game-ending single in the bottom of the 10th inning to lift the Seattle Mariners to a 5-4 win over the Chicago Cubs on Friday night. Michael Saunders and Raul Ibanez led off the 10th with back-to-back walks before Blake Parker (0-1) was relieved by Shawn Camp. Jason Bay advanced both runners with a sacrifice bunt, and Justin Smoak was intentionally walked to load...

Brad Miller gets the call

WATCH: Gray bearded Mariners fan catches two home run balls in 72 hours

Every fan goes to the game dreaming of catching a home run ball.  This Mariners fan caught not only a game winning, 3-run walk off shot by Kendrys Morales, but then, in what appears to be his regular seat, plucked Raul Ibanez home run ball 72 hours later on Wednesday.  Watch this fan catch both balls, in the air, from the front row of the bleachers (courtesy of MLB.com) Given...

Cubs-Mariners Preview

After starring as one of baseball's top pitchers for most of the season, Seattle's Hisashi Iwakuma must find a way to regroup after two straight defeats. The Mariners might depend on it considering their offensive struggles. Iwakuma looks to avoid dropping a third straight start Friday night when he takes the mound in the series opener with the Chicago Cubs at Safeco Field...
