Red Sox reliever Mark Melancon was optioned to AAA Pawtucket today according to Peter Abraham of the Boston Globe. This demotion comes as no surprise when you look at how bad Melancon has looked this year. Most didn’t expect him to put up the numbers he had in Houston, but nobody expected him to give up runs and home runs at the rate that Melancon has done so far. Melancon is 0-2 with a 49.50 ERA and a 6.00 WHIP. Bad doesn’t even come close to describing how Melancon has pitched this year. He has allowed 11 runs in 2 innings of work, while allowing 5 home runs. Obviously Melancon was in dire need of regrouping, and the right place for that is the minors. He is a much more capable pitcher than he has shown, even in the AL East with the Yankees. In 2009, Melancon had a 3.86 ERA and a 1.41 WHIP in 16.2 innings of work. Not a very big sample size, but for a guy who has a career ERA of 4.03 (and it was obviously far better before this year as he only has pitched 114.0 major league innin...

Sox send Mark Melancon to Pawtucket

As many speculated this morning, the Red Sox decided to option Mark Melancon to Pawtucket to work on his game in a less pressure-filled environment. The expected-to-be-solid setup man has an ERA just south of 50.00, so it's probably a good idea to take a look at what's going on. In his place comes Junichi Tazawa. Tazawa has been a promising pitcher for years now, but has...

Mark Melancon Struggles in Blowout Loss, Could Have Stint in Pawtucket in Store

BOSTON -- Nothing went right for Mark Melancon. As the Red Sox reliever took the mound in the top of the eighth on Tuesday night, he was supposed to steady the ship from the Rangers' offensive barrage. Instead, the 27-year-old simply extended the misery of the 18-3 loss. In a span of 26 pitches, Melancon surrendered three homers -- to Josh Hamilton, Adrian Beltre and Nelson Cruz...

Red Sox Option Mark Melancon to Pawtucket, Recall Right-Hander Junichi Tazawa

BOSTON -- First, Mark Melancon lost his late-inning bullpen duties. Now, the reliever has been demoted to Triple-A Pawtucket. After hinting at the possibility of a move after Tuesday's 18-3 loss against the Rangers, Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine confirmed the move in a radio interview with WEEI and said the team would recall reliever Junichi Tazawa. When Boston traded Jed Lowrie...

How sending down Mark Melancon could pay dividends

When the Red Sox acquired right hander Mark Melancon from the Astros during the offseason, the team expected him to be a solid setup man behind Andrew Bailey. That hasn’t been the case as he has been abysmal in four games allowing five homeruns, and having a 49.50 ERA. In order to for Melancon to regain [...]

Melancon's ERA & Tulowitzki's Errors

Boston Red Sox reliever Mark Melancon currently has a 49.50 ERA. In 4 appearances, he's pitched 2 innings allowing 10 hits, 11 runs, 5 homeruns and 2 walks. His WHIP is astronomically high at 6.00. That is crazy bad. Heading into the 2012 season, Melancon had only surrendered 7 homeruns in his entire career (112 IP over 3 years with the Yankees and Astros). Gotta believe things...

Tazawa Called Up

With Mark Melancon going down, Junichi Tazawa comes up, according to several sources. Tazawa has struggled to recover since his surgery, so his uninspiring numbers may not tell the full story.Do you suppose they considered bringing up someone other than a pitcher? Me neither.

Bullpen Woes Plague the Red Sox Once Again And Highlight Concern Heading Into Yankees' Series

BOSTON –– Another day, another lackluster performance by the bullpen. On Tuesday, Mark Melancon surrendered three homers and allowed six men to reach base in the eighth. On Wednesday, Franklin Morales imploded, plunking Rangers catcher Craig Gentry with the bases loaded and yielding three runs in the outing. While Morales was unavailable for comment after Boston's 6-3 defeat...

Red Sox News & Notes - 4/18

Things started off looking good for the Boston Red Sox on Tuesday night. Jon Lester got himself out of a mini-jam in the 1st inning when he got former teammate Adrian Beltre to ground into a double play. Then after Mike Aviles led off with a single, Dustin Pedroia smacked a home run into the Green Monster. But things took a quick change for the worse for Lester and the Red...

Possible Meltdown?

With the Red Sox coming off a great series win vs. the Rays over the past weekend taking 3/4 games which really helped the teams morale. Those high hopes were diminished in these past two days with Texas steamrolling them. The Red Sox looked hopeless on Tuesday night with “ace” Lester pitching and the bullpen tossing up BP to the Texas hitters. With the Red Sox losing two...
