Carlos Zambrano pitched a three-hitter for his first win of the season and Giancarlo Stanton extended his hitting streak to 10 games with a two-run homer, leading the Miami Marlins to their seventh straight win with a 4-0 victory over the Houston Astros on Monday night. Stanton's homer into the Crawford Boxes in left field put Miami up 2-0 in the fourth inning and gives him six home runs and 12 RBIs during his streak. Logan Morrison walked with one out before Stanton went deep. John Buck extended the lead to 3-0 when he sent the first pitch of the fifth inning into the right field stands. Hanley Ramirez added a solo shot, which bounced off the train tracks above the left center field wall, in the ninth inning to make it 4-0. It was the first complete game and first shutout for Zambrano since a two-hit shutout against San Francisco on Sept. 25, 2009. Zambrano (1-2), whose only no-hitter came against the Astros, struck out a season-best nine and never allowed a batter past fir...

Carlos Zambrano Reborn in Miami

Through all the tirades and tantrums that marred his eventual exit from Chicago, it can be easy to forget Carlos Zambrano is just 30 years old. This season, Zambrano is showing the world that he just might have something left in the tank. Through 41 innings, Zambrano is the proud owner of a 1.98 ERA. Despite his effectiveness, he wasn’t rewarded with his first victory of the season...

Marlins' Johnson believes he's inches away from solving slump

The Miami Marlins have been getting terrific starts from just about everyone in their rotation. Everyone except Josh Johnson, the two-time All Star who was expected to be the ace. Johnson makes his next start Wednesday in Houston with an 0-3 record and a 6.61 ERA. He is eager to bounce back from the shortest start of his career, when he was tagged for six runs in 2 2/3 innings...

Astros' offense freezes vs. Marlins, Cards

HOUSTON The deferential hat tips were obligatory: first toward Cardinals right-hander Adam Wainwright on Sunday, then another directed at Marlins right-hander Carlos Zambrano on Monday night. But for an offense that had seemingly discovered its stride, the Astros' sudden futility could be described as curious if concerning felt a tad overzealous. Wainwright and Zambrano have...

With outing, Rodriguez makes case for rotation

HOUSTON Aneury Rodriguez knew in advance that this stay in Houston would be brief, something akin to what Jordan Lyles faced when he was recalled to make a spot start in Cincinnati on April 29. The onus sat squarely on Rodriguez to leave a lasting impression in the mind of Astros manager Brad Mills, to pitch so effectively that Astros brass might view Rodriguez as the solution...

Marlins beat Padres to win 6th straight

SAN DIEGO (AP) -- Ricky Nolasco remained unbeaten, Giancarlo Stanton drew a bases-loaded walk to force in the tiebreaking run in the eighth inning and the Miami Marlins beat the San Diego Padres 6-3 Sunday for their season-best sixth straight victory. Friars Filleted By Fish In Three Game Sweep

The Miami Marlins continued their winning ways as they swept the Padres in San Diego over the weekend. Their sixth straight win included a series sweep in San Francisco before taking three from the Padres. The Padres failed to hold leads in two of the three games as their record dropped t0 9-20. They will look to rebound against the Rockies in a three game series that starts Monday...

Wainwright proves difference in Astros' loss

HOUSTON Each day on the calendar gives birth to the possibility of another baseball clich being evoked to convey a pertinent theme. On Sunday at Minute Maid Park, the clich referencing momentum and the next day's starting pitcher was particularly timely and applicable. The Cardinals had right-hander Adam Wainwright and the Astros did not. More extensive analysis could further...

Catch of the Year? Can’t “Waits” to Watch (Video)

Austin Waits, of the Houston Astros’ Double-A team, the Corpus Christi Hooks, makes an absolutely beautiful and acrobatic catch in the outfield. Look as he crashes into and over the wall along with his teammate, “Barnes,” and somehow comes down with the ball. What may be most amazing is how Waits was able to hold onto the ball…But wait…Did Waits hold on? Uhhhh??? I...
