The Miami Marlins have been getting terrific starts from just about everyone in their rotation. Everyone except Josh Johnson, the two-time All Star who was expected to be the ace.

Johnson makes his next start Wednesday in Houston with an 0-3 record and a 6.61 ERA.

He is eager to bounce back from the shortest start of his career, when he was tagged for six runs in 2 2/3 innings at San Diego on Friday.

"I didn't think I was going to have this kind of period," said Johnson, who missed most of last season rehabbing a sore right shoulder. "It's here, and you just got to get through it.

"Just off, that's how it is. If half those pitches are an inch down or a little bit more toward the corner, they're not hits, they're outs. That's how the game goes."

Johnson said he worked on two areas since his last start: repeating his delivery, and keeping the ball down.

"Just trying to make sure I keep the ball down," he said. "That's all I worked on. That's a better recipe for success than throwing it over the plate."

Johnson has allowed 47 hits, which is tied for the NL lead with Milwaukee's Randy Wolf, walked 12 and hit a batter in 31 1/3 innings. He has gone a career-long 11 starts without a victory.

Opponents are hitting .359 against Johnson, worst in the majors among 114 starting pitchers.

The Marlins got a fine start Tuesday from Anibal Sanchez, but it wasn't enough in a 3-2 loss at Houston. Sanchez gave up two unearned runs in seven innings, and Ryan Webb surrendered the game-deciding run in the eighth.
