ATLANTA (AP) -- The Braves showed no hangover from their champagne celebration, beating Miami 3-0 on Wednesday night as Martin Prado homered and Paul Maholm combined with three relievers on a six-hitter. The win came one night after Atlanta clinched at least an NL wild-card berth with Tuesday night's 4-3 win over the Marlins. After the game, Braves players sprayed champagne on each other in the clubhouse and on the field. The Braves began the night four games behind first-place Washington in the NL East. Prado hit a first-inning homer off Josh Johnson (8-14) and drove in Jose Constanza with a third-inning single. The Braves had only four hits. Miami has lost six straight and eight of nine. Maholm (13-10) earned only his second win in his last seven starts. The left-hander gave up five hits with no walks and six strikeouts in 6 2-3 innings. Chad Durbin recorded the final out in the seventh. Eric O'Flaherty pitched the eighth. Craig Kimbrel earned his 40th save, matching Jason Motte for the NL lead, with a perfect ninth inning. He struck out four in the inning. Donovan Solano struck out but reached on a wild pitch. Kimbrel also struck out Greg Dobbs, John Buck and Gil Velazquez. The Braves scored an unearned run off Johnson in the sixth. Dan Uggla reached on third baseman Velazquez's low throw to first base for an error. Uggla moved to third on Brian McCann's single. With Maholm at the plate, Uggla took off from third on an apparent attempted suicide squeeze. Maholm waved his bat at the pitch, which was wide of the plate and beyond the reach of Buck, the catcher. Uggla scored easily and was credited with a stolen base. Johnson allowed three runs, two earned, four hits and five walks in six innings. Velazquez had two of Miami's six hits. NOTES: Uggla's steal of home was the Braves' first since Jason Heyward on July 28, 2010, at Washington. ... Braves CF Michael Bourn (jammed left thumb) missed his third straight start. ... Heyward stole second, his 20th, after a first-inning walk. ... Marlins manager Ozzie Guillen said OF Giancarlo Stanton (sore left ribcage) may be held out until Friday's opening game of a home series against the Phillies. ... Guillen said he had no problem with the Braves celebrating after clinching at least a wild-card spot Tuesday night. "Everybody should celebrate everything they do in life," Guillen said. ... Braves RHP Tommy Hanson (12-9) will face Miami RHP Jacob Turner (1-3) in Thursday night's final game of the three-game series.

Freeman walkoff HR sends Braves to playoffs

Everyone remembers last year's epic Atlanta Braves collapse that kept them home in October. What you might *not* remember is that in the final game of the year where the Braves were officially eliminated, a Freddie Freeman double play was the last play of the year that officially put the final nail in Atlanta's coffin. On Tuesday, the Braves clinched a playoff berth (just...

Chipper Jones Makes Walk Off Home Runs Sexy

Freddie Freeman cemented himself a place in Atlanta Braves lore last night when he ensured that last years epic collapse would not happen again this year. A little fitting that it was he who grounded into the season ending double play last year, I'm a sucker for sentimentality. But let's not get ahead of ourselves, this is not about Freddie Freeman coming through in the...

Braves don't think wild ride is done yet

They met at home plate, the past and the future of the Braves. There was Chipper Jones, boxing out his buddies, wanting to be the first to congratulate the teammate who sent him and the rest of the Braves to the playoffs in his final season. He was waiting on young Freddie Freeman, who was practically sprinting around the bases even though there was no chance the ball was going...

Javy Lopez and Dale Murphy congratulate Chipper

Now here's a Chipper tribute video I'll watch. :) He's just so sweet. And here's my favorite Brave of all time...   Video: Dale Murphy on Chipper Jones

Encore for Chipper as Braves return to playoffs

Chipper Jones would love nothing more than to end his stellar career as a champion, and the Atlanta Braves are doing their best to help the retiring third baseman attain that goal. When Jones led off the bottom of the ninth inning Tuesday night with a double, his teammates were hardly surprised. ''Chipper's last year - it couldn't be a better story,'' catcher...

Michael Bourn’s Market Value

If you go to the Free Agent Leaderboards, you’ll see Michael Bourn‘s name at the top, as the sort for the list is set to descending 2012 WAR, and Bourn has the highest WAR this season of any upcoming free agent at +6.1. We can pretty much guarantee that Bourn isn’t going to sign the largest contract this winter, though, as free agent value isn’t simply based on a player’s...

Prado homers, Braves beat Marlins

ATLANTA (AP) -- The Braves showed no hangover from their champagne celebration, beating Miami 3-0 on Wednesday night as Martin Prado homered and Paul Maholm combined with three relievers on a six-hitter. Freeman powers Braves into playoffs

Freddie Freeman hit a two-run homer in the ninth inning to put the Atlanta Braves back in the playoffs with a 4-3 victory over the Miami Marlins on Tuesday night. Freeman's drive off Mike Dunn clinched at least an NL wild-card berth for the Braves, who squandered a big lead in the wild-card race with a huge collapse last September. Longtime star Chipper Jones, who plans to...

Hanson earns elusive win, Braves beat Marlins

ATLANTA (AP) -- David Ross and Andrelton Simmons raced home on left fielder Bryan Petersen's costly error, sending Tommy Hanson and the Atlanta Braves to a 6-2 victory over the Miami Marlins on Thursday night. Hanson (13-9) allowed two runs, one earned, and six hits in 5 1-3 innings for his first win since July 30, also against Miami. The right-hander was 0-4 with a 5.06 ERA...

Gameday post

Marlins' Josh Johnson set to battle Braves

Having clinched a playoff spot, the Atlanta Braves don't have to worry about another late-season collapse now. The Braves look to win their fourth straight Wednesday night when they continue their series against the Miami Marlins. Freddie Freeman hit a two-run, walk-off homer Tuesday, giving Atlanta a 4-3 win and at least an NL wild-card berth. The victory also pulled the club...

Braves back in playoffs with win over Marlins

ATLANTA (AP) -- Freddie Freeman hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth inning to put the Atlanta Braves back in the playoffs with a 4-3 victory over the Miami Marlins on Tuesday night. Freeman's dramatic drive off Mike Dunn clinched at least a National League wild-card berth for the Braves, who squandered a big lead in the wild-card race with a huge collapse last September...

Jack Wilson set to retire

Shortstop Jack Wilson is set to retire, Dejan Kovacevic of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports. The 12-year veteran made the decision after talking with his wife and kids. Wilson spent time with the Pirates and Mariners before being traded to the Braves in 2011. This past offseason he signed a one-year $1mm deal with the Braves. Wilson appeared in only 40 games this season hitting...

Mets-Braves Preview

Despite facing a four-game deficit in the NL East with six to play, the Atlanta Braves are still focused on a division crown. A favorable schedule makes this somewhat far-fetched goal seem possible. The Braves look to beat the New York Mets for the 11th time in 12 games in Friday night's opener at Turner Field. Atlanta (91-65) secured at the very least the league's top...
