In their first game against a major league opponent at Marlins Park, the Miami Marlins fell 10-8 to the New York Yankees on Sunday.     It was the first of two exhibition games against the Yankees with game two coming on Monday night.   The exhibition games were scheduled as a way to work out some kinks in the new ballpark while also showcasing the venue against one of the most legendary sports franchises.

Ricky Nolasco started the memorable game and pitched well until the fifth inning when things fell apart.    Nolasco’s first pitch which was captured by many cameras was lined into right field by Derek Jeter.   The Yankees would go on to score one run in that first inning.   When the fifth rolled around, Nolasco allowed five more runs.  In all, the veteran allowed seven earned runs on eight hits in five and two third innings on the mound.    Nolasco’s next start will come on Saturday in Cincinnati which will be the third game of the regular season.    Randy Choate, Mike Dunn, Gary Glover, Edward Mujica and Chad Gaudin were the other pitchers to take part in this game.   Glover will not be a part of the Opening Night roster but has stuck around with the team for the remainder of the Spring.

Gaby Sanchez hit the first Marlins’ homerun in Marlins Park against a big league opponent in the second inning, it was the first baseman’s first blast of the Spring.      The entire regular lineup started the game and played the majority of the contest.   One change was a designated hitter was in use due to the Yankees being in town, with Logan Morrison serving the role.    In encouraging news, Giancarlo Stanton was 2-4 with a pair of runs batted in.   Stanton is continuing to get back into form after missing a good chunk of the Spring.

On Monday the Marlins will take on the Yankees once again in Miami’s final game of Spring Training.   Going for the Marlins will be Carlos Zambrano while New York will counter with Hiroki Kuroda.
