The Miami Marlins announced Tuesday they have called up pitcher Anthony DeSclafani and that the right-hander will make his major-league debut as Wednesday night's starter against the Dodgers in Los Angeles. DeSclafani was 3-4 with a 4.19 ERA in eight starts for Double-A Jacksonville this season. In 43 innings he allowed 20 runs on 45 hits with 38 strikeouts and 10 walks. The 24-year-old is a former University of Florida product selected in the sixth round of the 2011 draft by the Toronto Blue Jays. Since the Marlins acquired him as part of the November 2012 blockbuster trade with Toronto, DeSclafani has been the organization's minor league pitcher of the year and a Florida State League Midseason All-Star. In 2013, he combined to go 9-6 with a 2.65 ERA in 25 starts between Single-A Jupiter and Jacksonville. DeSclafani will start in ace Jose Fernandez's place, becoming the first Marlins player to make his MLB debut in 2014. Fernandez, the reigning National League Rookie of the Year, was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a right elbow strain and could be facing Tommy John surgery. This means both lefty Brad Hand and righty Kevin Slowey will remain in the bullpen as long relief. Miami might also look into a trade for veteran pitching help.
