MIAMI -- In need of an extra arm, the Miami Marlins recalled right-hander Anthony DeSclafani from Triple-A New Orleans and optioned utility player Ed Lucas to the Zephyrs prior to Sunday's series finale against the San Francisco Giants. Over the past two games to open the second half, Marlins starters went a combined 6 2/3 innings. The bullpen is tied for second in the majors with 316 1/3 innings pitched. DeSclafani was sent down June 28 after another poor start during his second stint. In five outings, he went 1-2 with a 7.40 ERA. In 24 1/3 frames, he allowed 20 runs on 31 hits with 17 strikeouts and five walks. In his major-league debut in Los Angeles, DeSclafani gave up just two runs over six innings for the win. After that, the 24-year-old permitted 18 runs over 18 1/3 innings. Since his return to the minors, DeSclafani has surrendered just four runs in 17 innings over three starts. With Donovan Solano and Jordany Valdespin on the 25-man roster, it was an easy decision to make a move. Valdespin will start most games at second. Solano will be used in the utility role. Southpaw Brad Hand was set to pitch Sunday and righty Jacob Turner on Tuesday. Neither has shown consistency as a starter. Miami needed help if neither can go deep in their starts. Lucas is batting .239 with a homer and seven RBI in 51 games. He is 1 for his past 11 with a run, five strikeouts and no walks. Following Saturday's 5-3 loss, manager Mike Redmond hinted that, "We may have to bring up a pitcher to cover some innings over the next couple days. We have a couple young guys getting ready to start, so we're not really sure what's going to happen. We're thin down there."
