I’ll admit it. I’ve always been a fan of Marlon Byrd, even going back to the days before he was a Cub.
In his two years with pretty bad Cubs teams, he’s stuck it out, always played the role of the classy veteran, and has been a steady presence in the lineup, both in the order and on the field.
Byrd is heading into his final season with the Cubs, as his contract expires at the end of the year. And with his name floating around in plenty of trade rumors, he looks primed to have his best season yet.
No, literally, he looks primed. Byrd has dropped 40 pounds this offseason, shedding the poundage to get down to 215. Byrd’s always been a pretty hefty character, but has never had a problem moving around in centerfield and on the base paths, which has always come as a bit of surprise to me, given his frame.
Byrd’s dropped that weight thanks to a new diet and a new workout regimen, focusing on martial arts. Heading into a contract year, very likely one of his la...

Report: Rays agree to terms with 1B Pena
First baseman Carlos Pena is heading back to Tampa Bay.
Pena agreed to a one-year contract worth $7.25 million to join the Rays, Sports Illustrated's Jon Heyman reported on Friday.
The 33-year-old Pena played four seasons in Tampa Bay before heading to the Chicago Cubs last season. Signed to a one-year deal worth $10 million, Pena batted .225 with 28 homers and 80 RBIs with...
Pena heading back to Tampa
Carlos Pena is coming back to Tampa. He and the Rays have reportedly agreed to a one-year, $7.25 million deal. And while this may strike some fear in the hearts of Red Sox Nation, I think the reign of Carlos the Powerful is done.
While Pena is good with the glove, and can still hit a few home runs, his bat isn't nearly as mighty as it once was. Go take a...
Carlos Pena Returns to the Trop
When Carlos Pena had his breakout season for Tampa Bay in 2007, it wasn’t as a member of the Rays. Pena was instead just another of the hapless Devil Rays, slogging along in soulless Tropicana Field. Friday, Carlos Pena signed a one-year, $7.25 million contract to return to Tampa Bay and Tropicana Field, where the Rays couldn’t possibly be a more different team than...
Byrd uses Muay Thai to get ready for season
Playing baseball requires balance, coordination, skill and some kicks, according to Marlon Byrd. Also some sparring with his elbows and knees.
Cubs staking lot on Rizzo
Leadership triumvirate has more invested in his success than reputationsThe Theo Trio — as big-time talent finders — and Anthony Rizzo — as a potential franchise player — are putting their rather sizable reputations on the line while trying to rebuild the Cubs.
Cubs Sign Rodrigo Lopez
The Cubs have signed Rodrigo Lopez to a minor league deal with an invitation to spring training, according to Fernando Ballesteros at the Mexican baseball magazine Puro Béisbol (via Twitter). The team had been reported to be interested in bringing back the journeyman pitcher, and Ballesteros reported on Monday that rumors of the signing began circulating in the Mexican media over...
Carlos Pena is going back to Tampa
Carlos Pena is headed back to the Rays on a one-year/$7.25 million deal, Jon Heyman is reporting today. That's less than the $10 million he made with the Cubs last year. The Pirates never even feigned interest in Pena this winter (at least not as near as I could tell), and so it's probably not worth wondering what they would've had to pay him to come to Pittsburgh. Between...
Pena returning to Rays
Carlos Pena is a Ray once again.
Northside Archives: Trade Compensation
