So, Marlon Byrd is set to leadoff against lefties, at least for the next few games. His stats are pretty good. Byrd is hitting an incredible .667 (the same as his OBP) and his Slugging Percentage is a beautiful .917. How does he fare against right handers? Well, his .146 batting average, .186 on base percentage, and .390 slugging percentage are dreadful. So who should start against these pesky pitchers? Well, no traditional candidate really stands out. Fukudome has a .318 OBP, Theriot has a .289 OBP, Soriano has a .294 OBP, and Jeff Baker has a .071 OBP. The best option is a nontraditional one. Catcher Geovany Soto is not a cleanup hitter and has a .458 OBP with a .500 Slugging Percentage. Please anybody want to give me a good reason why not to make this change? When I suggest outlandish moves like this I ask myself a simple question, would Tony La Russa do it?
