The Pirates had a horrendous night on Saturday, as they managed just two singles and dropped their third game in a row–this one by a 5-0 score to the Padres.

A.J. Burnett did not deliver the ace/stopper performance we were hoping for. He had one of his worst outings at home, allowing a homer in the first inning (Chase Headley AGAIN) and five runs (four earned) in less than six innings. He struck out ten, but the Padres hit him pretty hard.

It didn’t really matter what Burnett did, though, because the Pirates didn’t come anywhere close to scoring all night. The definition of “mediocre veteran” Jason Marquis was locked in all night, and the Pirate offense was zoned out all night. Not a good combination. The Bucs were in danger of being no-hit until Travis Snider‘s 7th-inning infield single broke up Marquis’ bid to throw the Padres’ first ever no-no. Pedro Alvarez singled in the eight, and that was the entirety of the Bucs’ production for the night. Awful.

The only good news for the Pirates (besides Alvarez going a modest 1-for-2 with a walk) was the bullpen’s nice night. Jared Hughes and Jason Grilli both posted zeroes, which was nice to see after both struggled in their previous outings. Other than that….uh…well…

The Pirates have now lost three in a row, and they lost ground to both the Reds and the Cardinals. They’ve lost this weekend’s series to a bad Padres team–at home, with their two top pitchers on the mound. It’s been a bad couple of days for the Bucs, but let’s hope they can keep it to just that–a couple of days.

Padres 5, Pirates 0 / Box / 2012 Record: 63-50 / Next: Sunday, vs. Padres, 1:35

MVP: Alvarez (+.023) / LVP: Burnett (-.235) / Key play: Headley’s 1st inning HR
