Matt Harrison was arguably the Texas Rangers' best pitcher in 2012.  He was dominant at times and had a nice year despite landing on the disabled list about half-way through the season.  Harrison, obviously, was able to come back and perform well.  Now, the Rangers would like to reward him for his performance with a contract extension. According to Jeff Wilson of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, the Rangers and Harrison have begun discussions in regards to a contract extension (sorry, the news hit in the midst of Thanksgiving preparations, so it's a couple days old).  As the winter meetings approach, it's a good topic to cover.  The Rangers have made Harrison's extension a priority, so it could be done before Christmas. Harrison has two more years of arbitration eligibility, but the Rangers want to buy those out.  They tendered him a contract last season without having to go to arbitration, and they feel they can work out a deal that eliminates those arbitration years and hopefully some free agent years.  Harrison could become a free agent for the 2015 season. Harrison was 18-11 in 2012 with a 3.29 ERA.  It was his second-straight solid season.  In 2011, he posted a 14-9 record with a 3.39 ERA.  In his career, Harrison has a 4.08 ERA, but he seems to have figured things out on the mound. In late June, Harrison experienced back stiffness in a start against the Colorado Rockies.  He had to leave the game and was eventually placed on the disabled list.  Upon his return from the DL, Harrison showed little to no lingering affects from the injury.  If he continues on the pace he's been on, the Rangers need him at the front of their rotation.  Injury concerns really shouldn't factor into the equation here as Harrison still started more games in 2012 than he did in 2011.
